His early solo stuff he didn't like as much because the record company told him what to do. When he finally hit it big was when the record company let him write his songs the way he wanted. I agree, I get tired of his stuff cause it all kinda sounds the same, but he does have some rather upbeat stuff, like G-Bop, that's fun to listen to. Saw him years ago when he just hit it big at a jazz festival - he was really great then! But, he has something that works and makes him tons of money. Why should he change? Depending on the mood I am in he's okay. I think Ricard Elliott is very good. He has great talent and his music is good. most of the really good musicians team up and appear on each other cds. Peter White always shows up. I kinda like the Funk sounds best of all. Well we need to broaden our horizons until the Ms B decides to come forward with her latest gift of art. Thats it for now. This was supposedly a promotional video released by Portrait in 1987 to help the launch of "Time and Tide". I don't know if anyone knows anything else about the background of this. The video is very interesting, with questions about Basia's romances with a former English rock-musician who persuaded Basia to come to England; and with Danny White who at that time was living with Basia (short for Barbara, as Miss T explains it herself. Also there were snippets of the video for "Run for Cover" (which I never knew existed) and a version of "Prime Time TV" different from the "A New Day" video. Basia also talked about her family - the Trzetrzelewski family have an ice-cream business and are quite well off! Not sure if Ben would like to include this in his video project - problem again is that this is a PAL video! When you say G is unpopular, I guess you mean amongst the members of this list, right? Because Kenny "platinum to Siberia and back" G is certainly the more popular of the two. >They definetely sound like they have the same producer, but why is G >unpopular and White not? Reason number one: A monophonic instrument blaring along a narrow range of pitch is much more unpleasing to me than a polyphonic instrument which can cover a much more broad range. (Let us not argue that a saxophone doesn't have a "narrow" range of pitch, because it certainly does, when compared to a guitar). So, for starters, Peter White (along with thousands of solo guitarists) already rank above Kenny G (and thousands of solo sax players), as far as I'm concerned. (I'm not trying to knock all brass performers, but here goes anyway...) I really prefer to hear a brass section, consisting of at least three performers, rather than just one. If Kenny G was backed up by more powerful instrumentation, I'd like him too. Peter White tends to settle into a very relaxing groove, complemented by other relaxing instrumentation. Kenny G's sax is like a black dot on a white page, whereas Peter White is more like a yellow dot on a white page. I like loud music and I like quiet music, but Kenny G's music tends to be a bastardized combo of the two, while Peter White's music tends to stay safely on the relaxing side. Also, Kenny G has been forced down my throat by everyone over the past ten years (due to his extreme popularity) whereas up until very recently, Peter White has been spoon-fed to me by a single person (Diane Fisli). Those are my two primary reasons for preferring Peter White over Kenny G. They're both talented performers, but in light of everything else, Peter White is a fresher listen. I'm sure other people have even better reasons (for example - Kenny G is boring). I should add though - PW isn't all that exciting (to me) either, but when I want excitement I listen to Luscious Jackson. PW is for chilling out (and KG is for the used-cd bins). >No offense meant (really!), just curious.... No offense? C'mon - don't be scared of these people, Dirk.
