It is quite clear that Chip, Sophia, and I (and probably others) are in the minority on this issue. Personally, I've never thought of internet mailing lists as social outlets. I use them for information (and opinion) about a particular subject and use e-mail, phone, face-to-face interaction for socializing, chatting, etc. Not everyone feels that way. Fine. May I suggest that there may be ways to compromise between our two points of view? For example, if your post is entirely about what kind of computer you use or what car you drive or whether your beer "tastes great" or is "less filling," and there's nothing about Basia, Matt Bianco, Peter White, etc., could you change the subject line to reflect the actual contents of the message? That way, those of us who aren't interested in what speed you play your records, and so on, can just delete those messages without even having to open them. Also, when replying to someone else's post, it often isn't necessary to quote the entire message. I don't know if anyone else here is in Japan, but I will be soon. There, every call (even to the apartment next door) is a toll call and the longer it takes to download your mail, the more expensive the call is going to be. Other countries may have the same system. I'd rather not have to pay to download a long message that is 99% quote with something like "Me too." being the only new text. My point is that with a few small changes to how we do things on the ML, maybe we can all be relatively happy and put an end to this argument over off-topic posts Thank you, - -Brian* ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Jun 1998 00:47:07 -0400 From: Joe Baker Subject: Female Singers and their loves.... Ah, inspiration.... To be inspired is sometimes difficult. In an earlier posting I read where Basia's long gap between releases allowed her to live so she could be inspired to write inspired material. To each his own. Could this be a clue to Toni Braxton's quest for inspiration? http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/braxton1.html Joe Baker ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Jun 1998 00:46:45 -0400 From: Ed Cidade Subject: Re: basia-digest V3 #115 I am a retired Coast Guard Chief Warrant Officer.....though when it comes to our heroine, I am a devotee like anyone else.....thus the paradox I find when playing a recording of hers. Much like Ulysses on his trek across the great waters, I find myself bound to the mast of my ship listening to this great siren....only this time I am vexed because there is no music to taunt me away from my ship and I am wondering if (or when) she will sing again.....Sing again so that she can beguile all sailors who cross her path and pine away at her sound. Come on, Basia! If you're reading this.....we all miss you. What's wrong? Why the silence? You can do no wrong with any recording that you make.....just let us know you're alive and well.....otherwise we shall be forced to pine away and await your sound to guide us through the sea of life.
