THERE IS NO NEWS ABOUT BASIA. Skim through the archives and you will see we've explored many of the Basia-centric topics in considerable depth. While we ALL wait for news and (hopefully) another album, we're getting to know each other. There's only so much you can say about someone who hasn't released an album in 4+ years, who doesn't tour, who doesn't maintain a fan club, whose publicist isn't generating any publicity, who doesn't make appearances, etc. If you have a Basia topic or question, post it and I'm sure folks will share whatever thoughts or knowledge they have on the subject. In the meantime, I suspect others, like myself, would enjoy learning more about you and your other interests - musical and otherwise. The list will flow where its membership takes it. Rachael is a friend of Basia and Danny's, and worked for them in their office. Apparently Basia had a lot of time to get to know Rachael and they became pretty friendly - thus the "Take Him Back, Rachael" song is written to her to urge her to get that "special guy" back - you all know the words. And yes, things progressed, Rachael got married to that guy because she deserves it, and thus the song, and the accompanying "Rachael's Wedding" (which was a real hoot, live!). I don't know much more about Rachael except she no longer works in Basia & Danny's office in London, since it is closed. She may still help Basia sort mail & such, in Biggin Hill. Meg helpfully answers: >Rachel is credited on >Basia's albums (all THREE of them) as their indispensable assistant (or >something like that -- all I want to know is how Rachel got the job!). I joined the mailing list for the same reasons I'm sure most others did. To have comments, opinions, & just plain mutual love for Basia. That's right! No new news for Basia but we are here to patiently wait from some tid-bit of info on her. In the meantime, we can interact with others from many different places. I speak english because I was raised in America. I know of one mailer who writes in French and I am not upset. Aren't the others in different countries who have met someone on the list from their country, able to chat with them? Yes, we do personal e-mail to each other as well but I think the point of the list is to meet others with a common topic of Basia and as Larry stated, talk about other interests ... i.e. music, even a semi-dull topic of Chevy or Ford. It's preference, likes, dislikes and so on. The list lets you give your views and it is natural to go off on other subjects. It is getting to know each other. I am grateful that I have the opportunity to access info & people about an issue such as Basia and share our thoughts. Not everyone is going to agree with what is said and being a little funny and interesting is a healthy thing! Maybe something can be done for translating foreign languages so that everyone has a say about anything, including, of course, Basia and we can all understand what is being said. As always, Diane had the answers (with apt backing support from Meg). Thanks both of you for answering the queries regarding Rachael. BTW, I think "Rachael's Divorce" would be a terrible name for a new album. I mean what if the album turns out to be a big hit? Somehow "Rachael's Divorce is a big hit" would sound rather macabre, don't you think? :-) There have been several posts about Basia-topics and not Basia topics. Although I do agree that very long discussion threads way off topic can be annoying to those whose interests don't extend to the contents of the thread, nevertheless, I think it might be helpful to think about something else that this list does. As humans (i.e. pack animals), we often look for commonalities with fellow humans and THAT, IMO is the real reason why this list and all other fan lists are alive. Frankly, we don't need a list to appreciate Basia. We already do. We don't NEED to talk about Basia all the time. I think it is interesting enough that all of us have that in common. But what is more interesting is perhaps discovering the existence of OTHER things that some or many of us have in common too - interests, skills, gifts, opinions, etc. In that light, some of these off topic discussions are very refreshing (thank your stars that Meg and I have not started talking about food - the server would be flooded with our posts for days!!!) Between this and the Suzanne Vega list I get many dozens of e-mail everyday. Most often, I simply delete those where there is an off topic conversation that I don't find interesting and this is, in no way, meant as an offence to the person who posted the note. I simply don't have the time. Moral of the story : STOP GRIPING AND BELIEVE IN THE POWER OF THE DELETE KEY! And while you are at it, floss regularly. :-) Ciao, Ashoke. P.S. And I wonder... is it really possible to do that? And if it is... do we really want to? I don't know about the rest of y'all, but I've been on this list for a long time... and there's just so much one can talk about when the topic is only about one person -- ONLY. I mean... after we all discuss how one CD compairs to the next, or the way you can tell she's getting more comfortable with herself and her music (she gets better and better in each video), or we all take guesses at her weight... what else is left? I really don't care, nor do I feel the need to know, how often she gets a manicure, or how often she has to get her hair trimmed so that it's perfectly straight across. Oh, and don't let me forget... anybody know what she uses to keep that "fly-away" hair to a minimum? I think it was Jeff Hamilton (???) that said something about... if we were in a room talking we'd naturally stray to other topics, and I agree 100%. Good God!, if I had to sit in a room with 50 of y'all and listen to talk about Basia-this, Basia-that, Basia, Basia, Basia... I'd be bored to tears. However, my sentiments mirror, to some degree, those of Meg Evans who said: "especially after last weekend when I had something crazy like 40 messages, mostly about the computer discussion (with sides about the Ford/Chevy debate, etc.)" Going "off-topic" is fine with me, but must we create threads that pursue these "side discussions" to the Nth degree? Like most people, I enjoy good conversation, and I'm in agreement with others posting replies to my comments. If nothing else, it shifted the topic o' the day from playing records at slow speeds to something that all of us have feelings and thoughts on (i.e., free speech). Hopefully I've provoked some thought on our parts regarding stretching the limits of free speech beyond reasonableness to the point of selfish behavior. A live event for Basiaholics where Queen Becky strips away the rights of one of her lowly subjects. Musical background could commence with "Cruisin' for Bruisin'". Not sure exactly what act of attrition the worthless serf could perform as penance, maybe it's too far gone for that. Public flogging, dunking, burning at the stake, or perhaps a frontal lobotomy. A lobotomy would render me socially acceptable in the eyes of the throne, I believe. Becky, is it not the Monarchy's edict that one should be seen but not heard regarding protocol? In an effort to foster the popularity of Basia and her music, I would be willing to accept her appropriate punishment publically, on-line, with my only request that Basia's musical stylings be the accompaniment. I imagine Basia coming from her self-imposed exile, riding a white horse, and rescuing this lowly subject from the jaws of destruction at the hands of the Mighty Beck. Just as a hunter would flush an animal from it's hiding place, this video lobotomy may just pull our Lady from her hiding place. Supposedly you don't read this mailing list, but in case you do, or someone with a line of contact might pass this on to her... "Basia.... SAVE ME........... I'm being persecuted." Although I do agree that very long discussion threads way off topic can be annoying to those whose interests don't extend to the contents of the thread, nevertheless, I think it might be helpful to think about something else that this list does. As humans (i.e. pack animals), we often look for commonalities with fellow humans and THAT, IMO is the real reason why this list and all other fan lists are alive. Frankly, we don't need a list to appreciate Basia. We already do. > >Well I was away for 3 weeks I come back and there are about 150 messages under >the *BASIA* section. No more "Re: Basia blah blah" and then a message that says "How bout that new B-52s album?". No "Re: digest #". And no "New Basia album" unless Sony is going to back you up, heh heh. That way people who don't want to read Ford/Chevy, PC/Mac, and 16/33/45/78 posts can be forewarned. I spend a lot of energy telling people that the "Internet" is not some totally breathtaking different amazing altogether brand new form of communication that the news makes it out to be ("First live internet birth" was all over the news today - some newscasters even left out the fact that it was broadcast live on cable TV). I have to insist that we're nothing more that a group of ordinary people talking about an extraordinary singer/songwriter - the fact that we can't all see each others lips move is secondary. Can you picture twenty people standing around talking about Basia, and one of them telling the other to "stay on topic" when someone brings up French toast or shoe polish? I will go so far as to even say insult each other publicly if you want (as it has already started), but just make your subject line "Public insult to Becky" or something similar. That way anyone who doesn't want to read it can be spared all of the trouble that it takes to read an off-topic post and type a "please-stay-on-topic" message. P.S.S. - The new B-52's album is great. Basia also starts with the letter B. Tomorrow's lesson: How to troubleshoot your VCR. Simple "ground rules" such as this will hopefully satisfy all parties. Some of the off-topics are amusing, others interesting, and some go way too far. Accurate subject lines will definitely prevent one beind misled. I respectfully second the motion made by Mr. Hamilton regarding accurate subject lines. By the way Jeff, do you have the most recent prescription for Lisa Loeb's lenses? Her opthamologist's website has been blocked by my ISP due to content.
