I think it is amazing that someone who sang for intermission could rise to such fame. Sissel talks about that on her album "Soria Moria", and compares herself to the Ash Lad in that story. For those not "in the know", you should read some Norwegian folk tales. FWIW, the Ash Lad is a dreamer considered only good for keeping the fire going in the fireplace, but some event gives him/her the chance to pursue the dream and achieve great things. And in that sense, both Basia and Sissel share similar stories. Basia was persuaded at the last minute sing for a band in a talent contest, and Basia received the award for female vocalist. So, both Basia and Sissel personify the idea that dreams do come true. Majewicz" Subject: 16 RPM Larry, It's my turn to wipe the egg off my face. The more I think about it, 16 RPM was NOT the transcription speed. I believe it was developed in the late 50's for talking book-type recordings. As I recall from working in radio (in another lifetime), the turntables we used had only three speeds. The platters, however, were 16 (there's that number again!) inches in diameter to accomodate the transcription disks which ran at 33 RPM. Much earlier, in the 30's and 40's, I think they were all recorded at the popular 78 RPM. As to why these odd numbers were chosen for spindle rotation, I don't have a clue. On another note, when you hear Basia on the store PA system, you are not listening to Muzak. That company arranges and records all music for their service. You are probably hearing one of many background music services that appear on countless satellite transponders. They all work on the same assumption that by controlling the mood and flow and tempo of background music, we can all be more productive at work and spend more money while shopping. I wonder if it all works, anyway. Muzak seems to have turned into a generic name for all background music. Interestingly, they have branched out into other areas. They have a music server division that provides those 30 second snips of songs that you can sample on the internet CD sales sites. No. I don't work for them. I used to oversee one of their systems in a store many moons ago, though. Enjoy your weekend, Dennis - ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Dennis J. Six years ago I had a Norwegian girlfriend in Bergen and on my first visit there, we went to its wonderful concert hall one night to see Ibsen's "Peer Gynt" with the incidental music by Edvard Grieg. Before it started my girlfriend advised me to pay close attention to the woman playing the role of Solveig (actually my girlfriend's name as well), who she said was Norway's greatest singing voice. And she was right! Of course, it will come as no surprise when I say that woman happened to be Sissel. What a voice! Sublime! Much as I love to hear Basia's voice, I think Sissel's is better. I don't quite agree with Stephen where he says that Sissel's is the best voice he's ever heard, for I rate Anne-Sofie von Otter and Cecilia Bartoli a bit higher. That, however, is irrelevant, because that's comparing apples and oranges. Basia is a giant in her field and the others in theirs. Anyway, with my girlfriend I also lost sight of Sissel, but seeing her name crop up in this list has put me back on her track again. I think I'll do some checking the CD stores... ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 13 Jun 1998 19:43:05 -0400 From: Jeff Hamilton Subject: Cecilia? So true (apples and oranges) but nice to see I'm not the only one in the world who's in love with Cecilia Bartoli AND Basia (and BTW they both sing wonderfully, too). It seems I have a rival vying for the favours of these two women... But speaking in respect of Basia alone, aren't all the males on this list a bit in love with her or is that just my (skewed) imagination? BTW, Jeff, I may have a little advantage over you where Ceci is concerned in that she and I were born only six days apart; that should create some kind of bond, right? And she's performing here in Amsterdam next Monday. Boy, do I wish I could be there! But I'm hoping just as keenly that Basia will some day come over here and give a performance. AH! YES! I realized that there are mostly men on this mailing list! I think it is very re-assuring that there are fellas like you who have terrific taste in women! My heart is warmed knowing you would pick a woman like to Basia to admire! I am glad it's not MADONNA!!! She isn't the best representative for the female race! NOT AT ALL!! I live near Philly and would love to know where Sissel is recording. Maybe I can get info on how to purchase her music or possibly an autograph for Stephen or Ben!? And Brian, I would have to dye my hair black to be an exact clone of Basia!!! I would surely win the Look-alike Contest! Yes, the stonger the features, i.e. german, russian, and polish women, the more gorgeous the women. And my voice, like Basia, is deeper with conviction. Hopefully, not too deep or I'll be Mr. Tamara! I missed her in Allentown, PA. when she was appearing at the fair grounds. about 2 years ago and I could kick myself for I had to travel on business. Life always gets in the way!
