They're good, but none of them are Django Reinhardt. OTOH, Django was one, to their five. My other listening choice for female vocal is Sissel (or Sissel Kyrkjebø), an incredible singer from Norway. She did the humming, or vocalese, in the soundtrack for "Titanic". I have enjoyed her since the '94 Olympics in Lillehammer, where she sang at the opening and closing ceremonies. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Jun 1998 08:25:23 EDT From: Tab4muzic@aol.com Subject: Re: Basia club? Dear Basians, I believe even a group pilgrimage will not mend the lost friendship but thanks for the support!. I would love for this ex-relationship to heal if it's possible. I miss him terribly. We laughed, talked, and had simpatico. I will find out where the clubs are though. I live in PA. and when Basia comes to tour here, we should meet if everyone can commute here?! Or I'll commute to there!! He was very special to me. I have always had male friends since I can remember since they were much more trustworthy. But we are both married and he wanted more than friendship(catch my drift)! Honesty is my best virtue! I really do still love him but in a non-romantic way. He couldn't understand that either for 6 years!!! . He also loved Basia. He loves music as much as I do. There was some kind of strange connection that I had with him. Kinda Spooky!! I don't want to scare anyone but, I have been told I resemble Basia. My extended family are polish, russian, austrian, and lithuanian. What a mut! I have the eyes and nose representing the euro look. Great nose!! LIke Basia. When I first heard her sing, friends would say what accent does she have. I said, "What Accent"! It sounded natural to me because great aunts and family would speak polish around me when I was a little girl. Babbling is my favorite past time!!! Ha! Ha! Like I said before, "Best Friends" on the LWNY album(shows my age)has a lot of emotion for me. What a great arrangement! Never Fear! Basia will Appear!! p.s. I do remember the 4 speeds on the turntable. I still proudly use my "Technics" turntabe and my "Onkyo" receiver. Love to hear the crackle on an ALBUM(not CD) Brings back memories. Talukdar" Subject: Basia et al. Hi all: My four week stint with "Basia on Broadway" ended yesterday. In other others, I still listen to the CD a LOT but not exclusively. I was having a spirited discussion about mp3 formats with a fellow who was proudly showing off his MEGA mp3 collection! So I asked who the "Backstreet Boys" were? After looking aghast for a few seconds he said "Oh I am SURE you've heard them". And he played this song called "Everybody". Sure I'd heard it - last Saturday, at a club, and a few other times before that. I like that song - it tends to draw crowds AWAY from the walkways and couches on to the dance floor so that I can breathe! So there I've said it. I got a copy of the "Backstreet Boys". Not the epitome of musical talent, mind you, but I think they do "ok", specially on some covers. Most folks who do acceptable covers (a) have ok voices and (b) stick to the tune (with the notable exception of Bono, that is, who has a great voice but a questionable - ahem - interpretation of "I've got you under my skin" with - you got it - Frank Sinatra; I am sure Sinatra meant every word of over-dubbing. I had to qeull my shivering with vodka). So regarding the rugrats, I mean Backstreet Boys, one thumb, somewhat dubious, but up. Oddly enough the spirit of the song "Everybody" reminds me of Basia on the cover of the "Brave New Hope" single. There's that undeniable "I-m-cute-and-bad-so-come-hither-and-get-me-if-you-dare" aura. Of course, the statement is a lot less subtle in the case of the BBs. But then they would look hideous in Basia-drag! :-) Back to Basia, here's a question for you Diane: WHAT'S THE SCOOP ON RACHAEL? Why the songs about her? Peace, Ashoke. ________________________________________________________________ Ashoke S. Ashoke asks about Rachel while he's resting his thumb, which seems to have its doubts about the Backstreet Boys. Ashoke, Rachel is credited on Basia's albums (all THREE of them) as their indispensable assistant (or something like that -- all I want to know is how Rachel got the job!). At Basia's TSI show here in The-Great-City-Of-Chicago, she said "Yes, there really is a Rachel" and proceeded to sing "She Deserves It." Rachel has to be the luckiest girl in the world. :) I'm sure Diane will shed more detailed light on this subject, but I just HAD to get in my two cents worth. I wonder if Rachel likes buffalo wings? I hate living in North America!) Hi! I have all of the albums I know about. Yes, she is popular in Scandinavia (she is recording an album, right now, in Philadephia); she even played Maria in a Norwegian production of "The Sound of Music". I "discovered" Sissel in a Scandinavian deli/gift shop in Oakland, CA (I'm of Norwegian heritage). I saw these 2 import CD's and bought them knowing nothing about them, but I knew I'd made a good purchase with the first listening. With apologies to Basia, Sissel has the best voice *I* have ever heard. I have found more of Sissel's albums in other Scandinavian shops, and at Amazon.com, CDNow, CDEurope, and EveryCD. She has done duets with Placido Domingo and Paul Anka. She has even done one of Placido's special Christmas concerts from Vienna (1994), for which there is also a video (from CDEurope, in PAL, but they will do transfer). Yes, there is one Sissel website, that I know about. The address is: http://boris.qub.ac.uk/edward/music/sissel.html Sissel records on PolyGram of Norway, and the snail mail address is: Sissel Kyrkjebo in care of: PolyGram Records AS P.O. HOWEVER (of course, my issue is not with Ben, it's with the larger companies) I wonder if these people (record companies in general) ever realize that the only reason ppl do things like this (for example, make compilation CDs of an artist's videos) is because they aren't doing it themselves? It's difficult, but not impossible, to contact every producer of the shows (Arsenio, Late Night, etc.) and license the Basia performances for commercial release. Even if administrative expense made the project expensive, I'm sure there's not a single person on this list who wouldn't pay $29 (US) for a laserdisc, VHS, or DVD compilation containing all of the material Ben has assembled so far. There is an EP by my favorite band, the Art of Noise, called "Into Battle..." that has not been reissued on CD. So there are thousands of CD-Rs of it floating around, being traded and sold (most of the EP's contents were later included on a compilation called "daft" but they left out two tracks). If Island Records or ZTT Records just reissued the bloody EP on CD (they bothered to reissue it on cassette but not CD! Imagine that!), then the CD-Rs wouldn't be floating around. I think these people (the record companies) should encourage fans to take matters into their own hands, that way they (the record companies in general) can look around the net and see where the demand is for what. It would ultimately help them to develop better product, and unltimately they would make more money, and isn't making money one heck of a motive? (For example, if Sony had a mole on this list, then perhaps Sony would get around to releasing one or two songs that, say, might have been cut from one of the first three albums. That would be such a treat!) I need to work on my overuse of pronouns, I think.
