Somehow I think that putting the number at HALF is putting it a bit too high (no pun intended there) - but then again, as I said earlier, I don't get out much. It's perfectly reasonable that a few people may want to leave the list due to the "noise ratio", just as long as we all understand that if we were a hundred people sitting in a room, speaking on a topic that had very little left to be said about it, other topics would spring up. Because we'd all start to become familiar with each other as *people*, not just several dozen other membernames@domain.coms. Same thing is happening here, and on every unmoderated mailing list on earth - after a while, people just get to know each other better and start talking a little more freely. It's all pretty natural. Every mailing list I've joined, I did so strictly because I wanted to find out more about a given artist, computer, or musical instrument. Every mailing list I've left, I did so because it would've been more exciting just looking things up in the encyclopedia/dictionary/almanac/whatever. Being on one of these things is not too much different that being in an ordinary club. I'm sure NRA members talk about a lot more than guns. Back to research and information, though - Ben Combee's site practically has it ALL covered, with regards to Basia. The only other thing anyone can do on this planet is be a member of this list. (I'll bet the Gilligan's Island mailing list - if there IS such a thing - was pretty quiet until last week!) If Basia would just DO something - ANYTHING - do an interview, announce her studio schedule, slap a photographer (not Diane of course, though that, too, would make for ten digests worth of on-topic posts), get arrested for evading taxes, go bungee-jumping off the Eiffel Tower (I take that back - the design of the Eiffel Tower ensures instant death for anyone who would perform such a stunt), or , God forbid, RELEASE A SINGLE OR AN ALBUM, then we'd have something on-topic to discuss. In the meantime, we lounge... P.S. Phil Hall's "you just don't get it do you" was written to be funny and was quite funny (I thought so), if you got it, so let's not anyone start asking him to explain what he said. P.S.S. I'm not condoning WAY-off-topic posts; I'm just saying they can't and won't be avoided (even if she does release something!). We're people, not computers programmed todiscuss Basia. It all beats silence by a long way. P.S.S.S. I'd rather push a Ford than drive a Chevrolet. I'd rather push a Ford than drive a Chevrolet. Well, let's see... my first car was a Pontiac. It sucked. Mind you it lasted my dad from 1981 until he gave it to me in 1992. But it only lasted for me one year. My next car was a nearly-new '88 Tarus. Now that was one sweet car. I drove that pup into the ground, and sold it for $1,000 a couple of months ago. I found out the new owner only had to spend $1,600 to bring it up to speed again. Tough little car. Does this mean, unequivicably, that Fords are better than Pontiacs. Nope. Just that my 88 Taurus was a better car than my 81 LeMans. Never having owned a Chevy I have no idea how they do, but my aunt and uncle drive Suburbans, and from what I've seen, I'd love to have one. By the way, can anyone tell me just where I can get a copy of Angels Blush? Or any other of Basia's singles? I keep my eyes open, of course, whenever I go into the Rhino Records on Westwood, but apart from the random copy of one or another album, no dice. Anyone? Anyway, Jeff, I think you're absolutely right - when the people on an ML start discussing other topics, friendships are made and things become very relaxed and much more pleasent. My wife has often remarked that I shouldn't be allowed to have an opinion, and I can only support and defend her belief - because I know she's right. Am I wrong for accepting this? Why is Chip to be defended for taking himself out of the game? It reminds me of the Little Leaguer who, because he has entered a depressing slump, attempts to evoke the coaches and teammates sympathy by stomping off the field. If he had chosen to simply evaporate, both your ire and my incredulity would have been spared, not to mention the bandwidth. Anyone who complains publicly about off-topic messages might consider printing them out and then putting them in a pile and setting a match to it. It's a solution to such problems oft repeated throughout history. Anyway, I don't know which amazed me more - Chip's decision to announce his departure, or his hope that Basia creates a web page devoted to her music and personality! Mabey that's what has happened - she's neglected the new album while she's been wrestling (tearfully, no doubt) with html and Java. Too often singers and bands sound off-key and strained on live albums, which is why I don't usually buy them. Basia must have one hefty set of vocal chords; she sang like a nightingale the whole way through! (I know Dirk must be getting sick by now. Dirk, perhaps you should buy more Gloria Estafan.) ;) So, I have a question about "Half A Minute." Was it ever recorded before this album? I was singing along with that song, even though I'm pretty darn sure I've never listened to that album before. The writing credits show D. White -- is that Danny? And speaking of Danny, do you think he has every REALLY punched a photographer? Diane, has he ever punched you? And what kind of computer was he using at the time? Have to admit that songs like Copernicus can be rediscovered in this album and these are the best versions of "Yearning" and "New Day For You" as far as I am concerned. Being a musician however (mostly tenor), this version of "From Now On" makes me "nervous" because she comes dangerously close to going off-tempo (listen to the percussion and try to sing along...). But, at the same time, I find that delightful because the song keeps you on the edge. WSAYO is an excellent record in its own right, sounding like a poppier _Time and Tide_ with Mark Reilly's smooth vocals and Basia's great backing. In fact, BasiaWeb's next video conversion will be the video for "Half a Minute", probably later this week. Its a cute piece where the band films a scene on a desert island, goes back to their pad, and finds the island locale has merged with their living room. _WSAYO?_ is only available as a import CD. "Half a Minute" is also on _The Best of Matt Bianco_ along with many of the WSAYO tracks. Cheers (and back to work), - -- Benjamin L.
