My boorishness is only outdone by my desire to share my love for Basia's and Danny's music here - not to drive others away by expressing frustration over their apparent professional shortcomings - at least as I see them. This evidently was interpreted as personal antagonism, and for that I apologize. What a great gift he had and what a great body of work he left us. It's too bad Basia never recorded a Duet with him. And with regard to this recent flame war - much of it is a joke. This is a strange group with a strange sense of humor. What would some of the folks complaining now have thought back in the days when Roach accused Phil of being on crack? un abrazo, juan John Simmons TLCA#6693 Jacksonville Beach, Florida USA paxety@bellsouth.net 1983 FJ-60, 1973 FJ-40 ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 15 May 1998 05:28:05 -0700 From: "Diane F. Fisli" Subject: Basia on other albums &tc The name Basia is a fairly common one in Poland, it's a diminutive version of the Polish name for Barbara... So the fact that some people have songs named Basia or whatever may have nothing to do with Ms. T. Her albums released in Poland all have her last name on them to distinguish her from other Basias... Meg, please don't go. I don't know how long you've been here, but I suppose the "in" jokes miss a bit if you're not in the know... I understand your frustration at wanting serious discourse - but it's rather a dry well here at the moment, and we can't all be brilliant conversationalists (gawd knows I try)... Perhaps if you'd open a topic for discussion ??? Frankly, I'm glad this list has such a variety - if it was just dry discussion of serious subjects and nothing else, I'm sure I'd be elsewhere. I just can't take Basia or her music THAT SERIOUSLY. Juan, nice to see your post. I've been wondering how you are (and now I know!)... :) TTFN! --Di. I sampled it off the B-side of the "Whose side are you on?" 7" vinyl single. The recording is over 15 years old, so I had to do some digital noise reduction and signal equalization, but the result is quite OK. If I get hold of a better record player, I might do another version later. If anyone has rare recordings, and would like to submit them to the archive, please let me know. I've got loads of server space and a 155Mb internet connection. The password for the archive has now been changed. Diane, okay so I left in a bit of a huff. But I can't be bullied off this list that easily! I'm back on and ready to raise the ire of anyone else who crosses my electronic path. I wish I'd stayed to enjoy the fireworks yesterday! Thank you to everyone who wrote to me privately, whether or not they agreed with me. I don't expect total "serious discourse" all the time, but does it make sense to create topics for the list when the well is dry? I wish Basia would keep producing, just as everyone else does. My frustration with regard to an absence of Basia is with WNUA here in Chicago, which no longer plays ANY Basia -- and they were virtually Basia Headquarters, especially when The Sweetest Illusion came out. It was like Basia fever had swept through the city! And now? Nothing. It flared up a wee bit when "Just Another Day" came out, then nothing. I miss hearing her spontaneously on the radio, especially on the way to work which really perked me up. But I have TONS of other music that I am absolutely crazy about, and it most definitely fills the space (even a 4-year+ one) between Basia albums. See? That's a nice assumption that there WILL be another album! Perhaps Basia list members can share their appreciation of other artists -- perhaps even prompt others to try new music? There are certainly other artists whose work has touched me as deeply, albeit for different reasons, as Basia's has. Perhaps such a discussion will not only give list members something new and different to talk about, but it will also give everyone a true picture of the diversity on this list. Yes, we're here so members can share ideas, express feelings and even clobber us with their opinions. Perhaps yesterday's discussion was GOOD thing -- it brought some of the "quiet" members out of the internet circuitry, even if the discussion, as some members said, wasn't of paramount importance. And I also would like to thank Abrazo Juan for his acknowledgement of Frank Sinatra's passing. We've lost so many classy, timeless performers in the past several years. It helps me appreciate the ones, like Basia, who are still alive and kicking! Now, I've got my electronic boxing gloves on and I'm ready for another good fight! Anybody up for it? ;) meg - ----------------------------------------- "First keep the peace within yourself, then you can also bring peace to others." --Thomas a Kempis ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 15 May 1998 13:56:29 -0500 From: "Dennis J. Though if anybody should feel regret, it would be me for having brought up the silly thing in the first place. But long time members know this ain't no fan club here. We all have opinions, some stronger than others, and I guess you finally develop a thicker hide.. Like the world we live in, we have widely varying ideas about things, but we can get along because of our underlying common interest. Lord knows, things have heated up in the past, and most of us are still around to enjoy the ride. Meg, I think you should give us another chance. Just realize that this isn't a web site fan club message board where no one says anything but "Gee, you guys are great!" and "Kenny G Rules!!!" and the like. We're human. We're frustrated. We tolerate off-topic postings because there ain't much else to say that hasn't already been said many times over. Deep down we really are a friendly bunch. Ben, my limited Polish skills translate "Nasza Basia Kochana" to "Our Darling Basia" or something very much like that. As Di said, it probably has nothing at all to do with our beloved diva. Good to hear so many talking again. Have a fine weekend.
