By happy coincidence, my video capture card can also handle PAL signals. This means that I will very soon have the four Matt Bianco videos captured. If you want to see what they are, check out the BasiaWeb video project page. I just watched (in a tiny window!) bits of the first two... they both mainly feature Mark Reily and a much younger Basia, and they look like classic 80's fare. I'll have to play with the capture files some to see if I can use my setup to convert the PAL to NTSC. If so, I can also output them to 3/4" Umatic for further archiving. The video collection will be on two CDs... I need someone to do some research for me: find me a good source of bulk CD-Rs with no label and for 2-CD jewel cases. I found out that I can use the duplicator at work during off hours, so once I have the two master disks, it should take less than a week for me to dupe the set for everyone. BTW, I've thought about seeing if I could master these in VideoCD format which would mean they could play back on some DVD drives as well as on VideoCD players like the CDi and the software players that come with recent MacOS and Windows boxes. Any strong feeling on this? It would probably delay the completion of the project for rerendering and to get new software, but it would allow the discs to be played on a wider range of hardware. One other issue: many DVD-ROM and early DVD drives cannot read CDR discs due to their lower reflectivity. I don't have a workaround for this, but beware of first generation (one laser) DVD drives. Gotta run, more later. Basiaweb is http://basia.techwood.org/ - -- Benjamin L. Any strong feeling on this? I would like to have them playable on existing CDROM drives; DVD drives are just beginning to be popular and many on this list may not have access to them yet. Of course, I'll get whatever hardware it takes to see the collection :-) Regards, Mike Nice - ----------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 May 1998 05:06:15 GMT From: combee@techwood.org (Ben Combee) Subject: Re: Matt Bianco videos next Mike Nice writes: > > In <199805110725.HAA32044@eniac.yak.net>, on 05/11/98 at 07:25 AM, > combee@techwood.org (Ben Combee) said: > > >BTW, I've thought about seeing if I could master these in VideoCD format > >which would mean they could play back on some DVD drives as well as on > >VideoCD players like the CDi and the software players that come with > >recent MacOS and Windows boxes. Of course, I'll get whatever hardware it takes to see the > collection :-) I'm not proposing a non-CD-ROM format, I'm just trying to think of the viability of watching the collection in the future. If you're the lucky guy buying a 400 MHz Pentium II with DVD, you better know that it might not handle the humble CDR that the collection will be made available on. - -- Benjamin L.
