I think if an artist is going to do so, they have to be able to put their own stamp on the work to justify it. There really is no use in covering someone else's work if it sounds the same as the original. Some artists that I think are especially culprits of this are Celine Dion and Maria Carey. Though, I have to admit I like SOME of their covers (Celine's version of Diana King's "Treat Her Like A Lady" and Mariah's "I'll Be There"), many of them are shameless rehashes and not worth the time to listen to (i.e., Mariah's rehash of Prince's "The Beautiful Ones" and Celine's "River Deep, Mountain High," "The Power Of Love," etc.). It's also a shame, too, because they cover a lot of songs. (Though shamefully I have to admit I like a Hong Kong artist named Faye Wong and her many covers of Western songs, doing them in Cantonese--they sound almost the same as the originals, like "Dreams" (Cranberries), "Everything" (Jody Watley), and "Two Occasions" (The Deal), but there is something charming about hearing them in a different language. Plus, her voice is beautiful.) One recent excellent cover I can think of is Janet Jackson's "Tonight's The Night." And Barbara Streisand does a pretty good job of doing other people's work, too--most of her material seems to be covers or non-original work nowadays anyway. Basia, of course, wouldn't let us down EVER if she covered more. :) Her "Till You Come Back To Me" is just wunderbar! Take care guys--sayonara. joe ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Joe Palcher ICQ #4618534 English Gone Wrong Gold Medal for the Moment: (found on the wastebasket, decorated with cats, on the porch of a bungalow I stayed at will visiting Koh Samet, Thailand) "We are very cool and probably one of the most composed beings but when we cat we get wild on instinct. Neither does Barbra Streisand for that matter, but I still think they're both incredible vocal talents. I do agree that "covers" (songs already recorded by another artist) can be great fun to listen to and I do enjoy them. I just PREFER to hear new ORIGINAL music by artists I admire. It demonstrates their individual style and their individual heart so much better than anything by anyone else could. Don't get me wrong... I love Basia's version of "Until You Come Back To Me." I've gone on long enough... Thanks for all your responses.
