Here's why. VHS is not an archival medium. The "shelf life" of VHS is not much more than five years. Sure, tapes usually last longer, but you wouldn't want to ARCHIVE on it. If we can get ALL of the material preserved in permanent digital form, the replication issue can be addressed later. The compilation CD, with reduced video can be produced now, and at a later time, a CD to VHS (or DVD) transfer of the full video could be explored. (Ben willing.) My concern is that all of this priceless video be archived before it is lost forever. Now, an aside... Roach, Gosh knows, I usually ROTFL at your Dennis Miller-esque posturing - your wit and take on things are usually hilarious. But, your last post re: the compilation was obnoxious. Give it a rest. I lurk and contribute to this list for FUN. I love to interact with wonderful people from all over the world. I've made some great friends, shared lots af laughs, located some collectables that are priceless to me, and had some wonderful experiences. It's relaxing AND MEANT TO BE ENTERTAINMENT. I get enough of the other crap at work. Play nice, okay? We now return to our regularly scheduled program... ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Larry Lipman - --------------------------------------------------------------- Division Coordinator; Recording Studio Manager - --------------------------------------------------------------- The University of Memphis Commercial Music Program Campus Box 526546 - 232 CFA Building Memphis, TN 38152-6546 (901) 678-2559 [w/voice mail] FAX: (901) 678-5118 E-Mail: Llipman@memphis.edu ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ------------------------------ End of basia-digest V3 #11 **************************
