I like most have been > anxiously waiting to get this for viewing. I hope it can be made > available soon. Do you know how much you will charge for the cheaper > version? [my connection to eniac is acting flakey tonight... this is the third time I tried to respond -- I hope it goes this time] For copyright reasons, I will not charge any money for the collection. If I go the CD-R route, people who have sent me videos will get a copy gratis from the first batch I burn, and other interested parties will be able to get it for the cost of a CD-R, the mailer, and postage -- probably about $5 by the time I get around to production. Note: there will still be a delay for the CD-R version. Suppose I can fit all the material on a single CD (quite iffy considering the amount of video files I've got). Burning a CD-R is at least a half hour on a 2x recorder (I'm looking into getting either a 2x or a 4x). Plus, I still have all the time to digitize and convert to MPEG -- to give you a feel for this, digitization occurs at real time but usually takes a few passes to get just right. A small clip (3 minutes) is still about 300 megabytes of drive space. I then have to edit the clip and convert to MPEG -- this is a slow process, taking roughly 50 times the length of the video -- a 3 minute video coverted in just under three hours on my Cyrix P150+. The final clip was 43 megabytes -- I think I can get this smaller through a few tricks. Now, there are a few things I'll do to speed this up. 1) Bigger hard drive -- this will be bought in the next month and will let me store all the converted MPEGs online until I can burn them. 2) Faster processor -- another purchase I'll likely make before March. A K6-233 would cut my MPEG render time in half, I think. 3) The CD-R drive. 2x6 ones are at $300 right now, but it sounds like a 4x drive would be very useful for duplication purposes. 4) The CD-R media -- disc costs are now down to around $1-2 each depending on the place and brand. This is really interesting to me, in a way. Back in 1996 at the beginning of this project, I was going to use 3/4" Umatic and a linear editing setup at the local access station... then I upgraded to SVHS and computer-controlled linear at home... then I decided to go nonlinear... and now, finally, we've come around to making this a multimedia project. Note also, if CD-R works, I can also put extra goodies on there: archives of the Basia mailing list, all the material from my web site, and so on. So, that is where I stand right now. I am sorry it has been slow in coming -- I have a life beyond Basia and lots of distractions, but I do want to complete this, as I think it will be special -- a sign of the cooperation that can occur among fans of this wonderful artist. - -- Benjamin L. I've just discovered Basia and will take whatever you have as soon as you have it. I personally wouldn't mind "flaws" in an initial offering. BTW, does anyone have a feel for what Basia is currently doing? Recording plans? Appearances? Etc.? - -Irv. ------------------------------ End of basia-digest V3 #6 *************************
