Well, I have most of her sheet music. I can do my best to obtain books of her music for you, if you wish. For the most part, solos are in the transcriptions. Basia is really great - I wish you good fortune in spreading her music throughout Germany. the Capitalist (Jeff) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Oct 1997 05:42:24 -0400 From: rsystem2@juno.com (Jeff A Hamilton) Subject: Oh, look at the time... >Date: Wed, 22 Oct 1997 09:40:36 -0500 >From: Dan Meyer >Subject: Re: Hug 2/4 an 5/8 olive 3/4 tree 4/4 > >Most people don't have a clue as to what makes good music. >Just look at what sort of music is successful. Very interesting indeed. I consider myself at least just a little bit musically literate. But if I didn't have the transcription to the "The Sweetest Illusion" album, I would've never figured out the time signatures to "An Olive Tree" (actually, when listening to it, I was quite content with hearing Basia, Danny, and Kevin switch back and forth between 9/8 and 3/4 (which = 6/8) after I realized that 15/8 wasn't exactly right. (The intro could be easily notated in 4/4 (reduced from 12/4, from 24/8) but then the measure breaks wouldn't follow the rhythm too well.) I mean, I spent a good deal of time just playing the first minute of this song, trying to figure out what the heck they were doing and then decided the hell with it - buy the sheet music. And then, it's not all about being complex - only Basia (or Stevie Wonder too, but I digress) could take a song as simple as "Yearning" and record it so damned beautifully. I love that song (along with the other three dozen I have on CD). the Capitalist (Jeff) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 Oct 1997 18:52:42 -0500 From: Tatiana Carvalho Subject: Unplugged ;-) Hi everyone !!! It's Tati here! There's a long time since I wrote something to the list... I've been reading all the stories about how everybody 'discovered' Basia... It's been great! This shows that we all have really something in common!!! :-) Well, I had already wrote something about this subject sometime ago...but I'll repeat it ;-). My fisrt 'contact' with Basia was when I watched the video for 'Baby you're mine', and then I just started looking for her Cd's...musics... I really got 'hooked'(is that correct guys?? :-) ) on her...her music is really 'something'... the kind you don't stop listening...it just goes on and on...I bet I will Never stop listening her...it's the kind of music that just 'stays' with you...(in your mind, in the heart, in your memories...). Good to know that she apreciates Brazilian Music - Bossa Nova... - The first time i heard her singing 'The Waters of March' song(the one from the Wonderful Tom Jobim & Vinícius) I was stunned... the way she sang it...her voice is great, and the 'translation' was so good... it doesn't missed anything...i just closed my eyes... i've been imagining her doing a duet with the great Jobim... man, that would be just fantastic...i don't know if Jobim had the chance to listen Basia singing it, but I'm sure he would approve it...(i love that part with the piano...right before 'a point, a grain,a bee...' that she just goes parararara,...with her voice...). You might be asking why the 'Unplugged' title...well I just had a funny dream.... Basia doing an 'MTV Unplugged'... I think it's because we are all hoping she will be on studio recording something new... But I'm sure that she has already 'touched' my life, leaving all this great songs...they will always make a 'part' in my memories & heart! And it's always wonderful to know that we all enjoy her music...no matter where we are, no matter what country we live in, no matter what language we speak, the feeling is just 'all around'... I just hope someday I'll have the chance to see her on stage :-) It's a pleasure to be a 'member' in this list!!! You're all great people!! I heard "Matt's Mood" off "Whose side are you on" and thought "this is good" so I bought the album. I particualrly liked the weirdly-accented chick who sang the lead vocal on "half a minute". Some years went by... How I got into Basia #2 I was watching the ITV chart show and the video to "Drunk on love" came on and I thought "this is a bit like proper music" so I bought the single. Liked "Third time lucky" which was one of the tracks on the single (note, not the album version). Bought the album. Bought the other 2 albums. Listened to them for a bit. Thought "I like all of this, wonder if there's any more". Had a look round the internet. Found out the answer... :-( Also learnt that she'd been in Matt Bianco... and that Matt Bianco was not a person! george George Davson, Computer Services, Oxford Brookes University, Oxford, UK gdavson@brookes.ac.uk Tel: +44 1865 483317 Fax: +44 1865 483073 ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Oct 1997 20:11:25 -0400 (EDT) From: Samurai27@aol.com Subject: Re: Hello everybody! I'm new on this list! Martin, I like most of us have been fans for a long time. Unfortunately she has not been doing anything lately. She was supposed to be working on her new project but no one really knows how much she and Danny actually have completed. When Danny had his wedding, I guess everything has come to a stop. Most of what is out in the US is: Time and Tide, London, Warsaw, and New York, The concert CD, and one more (I can't remember the name)has hug an olive tree on it. She made a cut (One song) on Peter White's last cd Caravan of Dreams. Some of us have bought the Japanese cuts (re-mixes) that have a few new songs. Thats about it. We are all starved and miss hearing her voice. Most of us have memorized every word in every song. We love her very much. Oh well. The members on this list are from all over the world, US, Canada, Brazil, Europe, Japan, Asia and Australia. Take care. I've enjoyed reading other people's so now I'll share mine.... I guess I heard "Time and Tide" when it was released in the late 80's on pop radio stations. I didn't know anything about who it was, I just liked the song. Listening to a contemporary jazz station in the early 90's I was introduced to "New Day For You", "Cruising For Bruising" and "Until You Come Back To Me." By then I had linked all these songs to the name Basia. Then one day I saw a concert ad, Spiro Gyra (sp?) opening for Basia. I wanted to go but no one else knew who she was or was interested. After asking enough people I found out an old friend was going. I called him and he had an extra ticket. Sad to say I wasn't familiar with all her songs before I went to the concert, but no matter. It was still the best concert I've ever been to by far. I've never again seen or heard so much musical talent on one stage in one evening. I believe this was probably in 1994 or 1995. In one of the photos in the "Basia On Broadway" CD, Basia is wearing a strapless dress, black from the waist up, skirt made of metallic squares and a hat to match. I remember her wearing that at the concert. From then on I've collected all the CD's I was able to find in stores (what I've found in the US, Texas to be more specific: TimeandTide, LondonWarsawNewYork, BraveNewHope, TheSweetestIllusion, the DrunkOnLove single, BasiaOnBroadway and a TimeAndTide gold disc). After reading all the messages the past couple of weeks I feel very fortunate to have seen her perform live. Has she done so since then? I think I remember reading that see lives in England. Does anyone know if she ever performs there? Final question: What's the best way to go about getting these 2 Japanese imports I keep hearing about? As a result, her fan base has been neglected to the point we all pine and whine about how little we are stroked, despite the $ we throw in her direction. Today I see Holly Cole, the OTHER Canadian siren, has released her, what, 6th album in 4 years or so..........1998 seems so far off....
