I am new to this mailing list; this is my first post. My name is Jen and I live in Detroit, Michigan. Why do I like Basia? Well, I first heard Basia on WXCD in Detroit. WXCD played "new age" and contemporary jazz, and they did play a lot of Basia. I knew after I heard her a few times that I had to have her cds. WXCD is long gone (replaced by an - AACK! - acid rock station!), but I still have and treasure my Basia cds. I have a lot of formal music training in my background. The first thing that struck me about Basia was her voice. Her voice is very versatile, but has quality and purity of tone. She could tackle anything - pop, jazz, whatever, - and make it sound great. She can even skat with the best of 'em. Her range is also impressive - she sings lower than most women dare, but she pulls it off and it sounds fabulous. I also love her songs. The writing is very good. The backing vocals arrangements are full and wonderful. Basia's voice is such that it needs no "masking" or cover the way a lot of other pop artists do - she's best when she isn't overproduced. Nonetheless, I do enjoy her more pop songs, such as Drunk on Love, but they're by no means my favourites of hers. I miss hearing her on the radio. Despite its musical heritage, Detroit is surprisingly limited in its station selection. There is one self-proclaimed "cool jazz" station, which is really more like a soft rock station (I don't consider Mariah Carey or Whitney Houston jazz!). There is one classical station, and one public radio station which plays REAL jazz. And of course, numerous pop, rock, heavy metal, alternative rock and rap stations. But ever since WXCD left the air, I just don't hear Basia on the radio. That's my two cents... ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 16 Oct 1997 12:53:21 -0400 (EDT) From: Richard216@aol.com Subject: Re: basia-digest V2 #174 The music and her voice are incredibly unique with a latin flair that I find irresistable.. The melodies are something that move me emotionally. Its hard to explain. I remember the first time I heard a song by her. I was instantly hooked. Hard to explain as I said. ------------------------------ End of basia-digest V2 #176 ***************************
