I love her voice, I love the way she speaks and makes those cute little gestures with her face. I love her singing voice. I am Polish and believe she makes us proud. I have bought every record, tape or cd of hers that I could find. I just wish she would come back to me. I have any autographed picture of her up on the wall in my office. By the way when is that basia video comming out? I am waiting for it. Here in Atlanta, at least two years ago, a new radio station came aboard: WJZY (I think) 104.1 (sandwiched right between the lamest radio station on earth - WVEE (103.3) and the runner-up WALR (104.7)). I used to listen to them a lot but they started competing with the two lame stations too much to see who could play the most Luther Vandross songs in a row. Anyway, they played "Drunk On Love", which I thought was absolutely brilliant (normally I won't buy a CD after just hearing ONE good song but this song was GGRRRRRRRREAT (visions of Frosted Flakes commercials) so I got "The Sweetest Illusion" which was AWESOME so I got "London Warsaw New York" which was EXCELLENT so I got "Time And Tide" which ROCKED (all of this in a very short period of time). As it so happens, she's also got a great voice and she's really beautiful, but first and foremost what matters to me is that her and Danny are two of the brightest authors and composers on earth. >>>For all Basia fans let's keep the chatter going. Tell us, "Why are you such a Basia Fan?"<<< 'Cause she's awesome! (I know that sounds juvenile, but that's the bottom line!) Nothing would make me happier than for her to release a few more albums before the end of the decade but that probably won't happen. Maybe a double-length one a la Smashing Pumpkins / Bone Thugs N Harmony or something. At least longer than 50 minutes. But heck, I'd spend $15 on it even if it was just a 20 minute EP. P.S. For everyone in the Atlanta area: WCLK (91.9) still blows WJZY (104.1) away! (not like I've ever heard WCLK play a Basia tune, though...) the Capitalist (Jeff) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Oct 1997 15:28:44 +0200 From: Rob Nisters Subject: [none] Why do I like Basia? Kind of hard to say. Of course I like her voice, the lyrics and the music but there's more and that part is harder to describe. First of all, listening to her music makes me want to sing. It is so gracious, effortless and silky-smooth that I feel it's SO good to be alive. And that feeling expresses itself best in song. It doesn't mean that all my worries are gone or everything is rosy, it just means dealing with all that stuff becomes a bit more natural, relaxed, gracious. Writing this makes me more understanding why there basically are not more than 3 CDs of new material. I feel that it is not possible to produce such fine-tuned music if certain conditions aren't met. I'm sure all of us want Basia to feel happy, capable of dealing with life's difficulties and relaxed. I also sense she's not feeling that way in reality. To sum everything up: it makes me more patient for new material, I'm not so hungry anymore. Well actually the hunger is still there, but I feel more relaxed with it. I am no religious man and imbibing that music makes me feel more connected with love, mankind, the universe and god. It is like the sight of a beautiful scenery on a fine summer day. The fine summer day already was there and listening to the music (or even remembering it) gives it a peaceful, gracious quality. Like....... I guess I could go on for a while, but I suppose you all got the gist of it. This is my contribution to the basia@smoe.org I don't know about you all out there, for me it feels good to have done it. I feel kind of insecure sending this e mail out into the world because I haven't seen anything like it in the month or so that I am receiving this collection of letters of Basia-lovers. The general consensus seems to be: "Do not write so much about feelings." It just makes me feel different. As I am a tall guy I should be used to that feeling but I haven't. I wish you all a lot of pleasure enjoying music. Keep them e mails coming in! ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Oct 1997 08:20:53 -0500 From: Larry Lipman Subject: Discovering Basia All right already... here it is.... How I Discovered Basia: Was serving on the Grammy Engineering Craft Committee during the time "New Day for You" was hot. At that time, NARAS was divided into 7 divisions or chapters, and EACH chapter formed a local committee of 5-7 individuals approved by the National membership to preliminarily screen and judge ALL the albums nominated for an Engineering Grammy. Eventually, the top choices would then be judged by the entire National membership for the Grammy. Our local committee would gather together several times as a group to audition all of the albums. (We met together, but voted individually.) "New Day for You" (as well as most of the material on the album) struck me as really phenomenal - though it is sometimes tough to make a distinction between production values and engineering quality. Anyway, after individual committee members had cast their ballots, we would divvy up all of the albums. I of course, opted for the Basia album and have been hooked ever since. The songs, production values and engineering have just kept gettting better. My experience has been that most artists' albums usually peak in oveall quality, then decline. After all, most artists only have a 3-5 year professional life. I feel TSI defies that and is actually an example of some of Basia/White's best work. The Basia/White collaboration produces beautiful music - aural imagery, lyrically expressive, accessible, original - touching me in a way few other artists do. I hear A LOT of stuff - and a lot of it sounds good - but precious little of it has such depth and character. I can enjoy a lot of material on a surface level, but I cherish material that I can go back to over and over and still discover something new with each listen. That's why it is so depressing to consider we may never hear anything else from them. So, now I've bared my soul. Who's next? P.S. I've tried in vain to obtain a copy of WOM/AB. Amongst the listings there were several *record dealers* who were offering various Basia albums, etc. I came across one listing that was offering Angels Blush. I sent the guy an email and he confirmed that its was. So I sent off my money and within a couple of weeks there was my copy of the promo disc. Now the real story behind this is that the person who was selling this and other CD's was our own Andrew Kim. Just shows you what a small world it is out there, but I still dont want to be asked to paint it. bfn BobR (who now has Christmas 10 weeks early with Angles Blush and Songs of the Season playing) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Oct 1997 22:18:28 -0500 From: tneyens@wxc.com (Tony Neyens) Subject: Why do I like Basia? To add my two cents worth to the new discussion... As I had previously mentioned to you earlier, I had listened to Basia's songs from her first two albums when they had quite a bit of air-play. Her songs were very good, toward the higher end of the songs that were being played back then, although nothing that really hooked me into them. Everything changed when an employee (who since moved on), who was a good fan of hers, brought in TSI to play. (We can have the radio, or sometimes play tapes or CDs, at work as long as it wasn't too loud.) The style of music on the album, as well as her singing struck and impressed me a lot. I felt very enchanted both by her vocal style as well as the music on pretty much the entire album, enough that I had to get a copy of my own. I would eventually pick up the other CDs, especially when one radio station in town (WMGN, FM98.1 in Madison) plays her music in the evenings. (They play light jazz and new age music each evening, as well as on Sunday mornings. They play adult contemporary music with some pop rock selections as well during the day. They also play music from the 70s on Saturdays.) I certainly agree that all of her music is very good and enchanting. My absolute favorite album has to be TSI (the one that got me hooked). My most favorite songs are 1st, Drunk on Love, and 2nd, Baby You're Mine.
