It was great! Summer '94. Yes, I was rather annoyed that she cancelled, then I tune in to Arsenio and there she is singin' her heart out... oh well. But, I've seen her 3 times here in Phoenix. Still keeping my fingers crossed, like all of you are, that she resurfaces next year. And, keeping in the spirit of this message... my favorite track I think is "Yearning." But, you're right, her first album is probably her best. I hope this doesn't happen! > Actually, I think that if she chose to retire, anyone subscribing to this list would be among the very last to know. The general feeling around here is that, yes, she does/has make/made GREAT music. I feel that in the past ten years there has been no other artist to come close to Basia (and her partner Danny White) in the popular music realm when it comes to an original and totally refreshing sound. But if what she has said in recorded interviews is true, she is not in it for the long term. The demands of show biz are too much, and interfere with her personal life. Sounds negative, but actually we have had some fun with this, including the speculative notion that since she seems to generate a new album every three-four years, then by God we are due a new one in 1998 at the very latest! > > > > When did you first become interested in Basia, BTW? > > > > Phil > > I had heard "Time and Tide" several times when it was popular and while > I liked it, it didn't make me want to run out and buy her cd. Howeever, my personal favorite cut is from LWNY: Baby You're Mine. I have to wonder if, based on her avowed love of Brasilian music, she and Tom Jobim ever met. > Since then, I have purchased every CD I could find by her. Saw her in > concert once and it was great! Not a fanatical fan, but someone who enjoy's > her music very much and hopes to see her in concert again! I have seen her twice, both times in Boston: '90 and '94. In each instance there was an album to push, so I would say if there is any hint of appearances in the near future this will herald the vaunted '98 release. Unfortunately none of the New England summer music venues have so far mentioned Basia as yet. Hmmmmmm....You mention that she cancelled a performance due to health a few year back. I recall that she said, during an Arsenio Hall show, that she cancelled Pheonix because of the flu, the night before. Was that the one? There seems to be an overwhelming preoccupation with when the next release is coming. I remember how badly I yearned for "Sweetest Illusion" and ultimately realized that you don't just crank out great art on a schedule. It was well worth the wait, as, hopefully, the next release will be. There are many other great artists who take their time, for whatever reasons, between releases. A few of my favorites who whould fall into this category are Sade, Swing Out Sister, and Enya. In these cases, the long waits have usually been worthwile. There are also many cases where record companies have "held a gun" to artists (the group Boston, for example) to force releases and the results here are almost always unhappy ones. Either the artist releases junk (as an insult to the recording company) or you end up waiting much, much longer. In short, I would rather have Basia release a recording when she and Danny feel like they have produced something that they are satisfied with. As fans, we have been blessed with an artist who writes brilliant lyrics in English (which as a second language, is no mean feat), is an excellent collaborator with her fellow musicians and humble enough to acknowledge their contributions. In her liner notes she credits her voice coach - how many pop stars would do this? But best of all, for me, at least, is that her music is probably more emotional than any artist I have ever heard. I had the priveledge of seeing her at Harborlights in Boston a couple of years ago and I was astonished at the level of emotion she conveyed to the crowd. She was in tears at least three times that night and it was easy to see that it was not just an act. The fact that it was Danny's birthday that night made it even more special. So, will I get to see her live again? I hope so. Will her next recording be out before too long? We all can hope, but even if none of these things ever happen her music will surely stand the test of time and we can all look back with a good feeling in our hearts. If Basia is ready to give us more, then let it be, but respect her enough to work at a pace that she is happy with. Thanks to everybody for all the wonderful tidbits of info that make this listing worth reading. Bye for now, Bill ------------------------------ End of basia-digest V2 #92 **************************
