If you change servers, you run the risk >of: >a) confusing people >b) having access problems (what may be an awesome server for one person >may suck for another) Well, I wasn't talking about *everybody*, just me, and I was just looking for advice on an alternate server for myself ONLY... You all can stay on irc.stealth.net if that's fine with you, but I was having severe troubles with lag - over a minute - and it wasn't during dcc'ing files, it was just while chatting. I changed over to another irc. server and my lag time decreased dramatically... Was merely looking for a way to fine-tune it some more. >If this is becoming a question of "file transfer speed" for you, I >think you need to ask if its really IRCing you're looking to do - I hate >to sound crass but you guys are (and were) flipping out over sound files >that, like, everybody already has. You know, I must admit, I don't know what your soundbytes are that you've offered on your website Roach, but I tried to go for some *different* things (among the typical songbytes), such as Basia talking - saying stuff like "Beautiful!" and "No, no!" and "Basia" and "I really enjoyed myself" and other things (like Basia's laughter) that might relate to people using a computer and having those little soundbytes as event sounds... > I know some people think that stuff is >cool, but is this really something for the IRC chats? I dunno. Somebody asked me for some Basia soundbytes last chat, so I did 'em up as a favor. Sheesh, I had no idea it would become such an issue. Frankly by the time you arrived Roach, we had chatted a lot about Basia (nothing new, talked about Brazilian influences, covers, fave songs, when/where we've been to Basia concerts, etc). You just missed it, that's all. :) Besides, I've been in other IRC chat rooms where having a bunch of soundfiles just adds to the general hilarity and enjoyment of the chat... You share the soundfiles, and then if someone wants to play one to illustrate a point or make a special comment (or make somebody laugh), everyone else can hear the soundbyte too! Maybe I should stay away from the irc chat, if you're gonna get your shorts in a knot over this. I was just trying to be friendly and help others enjoy their IRC experience. >But, if you think I'm full of >$^%&, well, then, you're entitled to your opinion. Still, I think the >time, date, and place are just fine. Nah, I don't think you're full of $^%&. (honest!) And the time & date and place are fine for me too. I just wanted to find a better personal server so I didn't have a 72 second CHAT lag... That was happening *without* the downloads, and believe me, It was frustrating until I changed over (personally) to a different server. Lag sux when you're trying to carry on a conversation with people. >Note to AOL users: for those of you who haven't been able to get to the >IRC (I don't know for sure if there even IS a way to do it from AOL), we >can always set up something in the AOL Chat Rooms... I am not on AOL anymore, so I cannot ask them myself, but I do know there *is* a way for AOL'ers to get on IRC. However, access to IRC from AOL is limited (it might also be Undernet.net rather than irc.net). AOL users have to have a different winsock (downloadable from AOL) that will allow them to use outside software such as Netscape or Explorer as their browser, or any kind of IRC software, while operating inside the AOL shell. AOL'ers should contact AOL to see which IRC servers they can use, and if the IRC servers are not connected to irc.stealth.net we can *all* try changing over to that server (or some server that will connect to it) and have a chat *together*. I don't think we ought to be so rigid in our special chat times, seeing as we are *still* not convenient for some people. (Takuya from Kobe Japan logged in from work during his lunch hour to say hello!) (but we missed ya, Tati from Rio!) I mean, life is variable, you might have a date or have to work or need to share some quality time with your family or spouse or kids, or WHATEVER on Wednesday at 9PM EST. Anyone out there who can't make it to the Wednesday chat can do it some other time (with or without the rest of us) (nobody is *that* integral to having a Basia chat), just pick a time, announce it, and go for it! :) - --Di (simply wishing we could "all just get along"... ) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 Feb 1997 16:05:50 EST From: roach2@juno.com (J.S. And I've gotten a boat-load of positive comments about them... >but I tried to go for some *different* things >(among the typical songbytes), such as Basia talking - saying stuff >like "Beautiful!" and "No, no!" and "Basia" and "I really enjoyed myself" >and other things (like Basia's laughter) that might relate to people using >a computer and having those little soundbytes as event sounds... I have no problems with your soundbytes at all. I just think they'd be better suited for a website... see, you post this stuff about the sound bytes, and then you get a bunch of people (lurkers and whatnot) who have no idea how to use the IRC and are left out wondering, "well how do I get these soundbytes?" And I feel bad for them because they'll never be able to hear these things and what consequently happens is you guys spend the better part of an hour clogging up the channel with "Phil, click on your mega-sound motivator..." (sorry Phil, no offense) so he can hear a part of a song he's already got on CD! >Frankly by the time you arrived Roach, we had chatted a lot about >Basia (nothing new, talked about Brazilian influences, covers, fave songs, >when/where we've been to Basia concerts, etc). You just missed it, >that's all. :) Huh, yeah, well, excuse me for showing up on time. I talked to Tom R. in California and he told me you guys were in there as early as 8:30 (5:30 PST)... he told me (excuse me, Tom, for quoting you) he was so frustrated with it that he decided to quit because it was becoming too much trouble with all the side conversations. Plus, who am I to give a %^&* about what the topic is? Look - so far, all the chats I've been to have been boring as $^%&, and it has nothing to do with whether the chats have been about Basia or not. They've been just plain boring, no matter what the topic is. The only thing that's saved them for me is in being able to chat privately with Dennis about whatever. But I haven't complained until now because I figure the IRC is what you make it... Think about it this way: what would happen if people started talking about asteroids (one of the side topics Wednesday night) on this list? What if I started sending messages about iced tea flavors? Slightly off topic is one thing - WAY off topic is another. >Besides, I've been in other IRC chat rooms where having a bunch of >soundfiles just adds to the general hilarity and enjoyment of the >chat... >You share the soundfiles, and then if someone wants to play one to >illustrate a point or make a special comment (or make somebody laugh), >everyone else can hear the soundbyte too! I couldn't. Phil couldn't (until you hooked him up). I don't think Dennis could. There's about 50% of your audience right there. >Maybe I should stay away from the irc chat, if you're gonna get your >shorts in a knot over this. I was just trying to be friendly and help others >enjoy their IRC experience. No need. But I probably won't bother with it anymore because its been too much of a hassle. And to be bluntfully honest, I could think of a lot more interesting things to do with an hour. This is petty and I won't clog up the list with anymore. Do any of my Basia-friends out there know where I might find for download a Win95 cursor arrow, similar to the Win95 arrow-L (largest size), but in a solid bright color? OR how I can change the arrow-l color from its current white? I'm visually impaired and surfing the net only brings up cute animated cursors. I need something functional! Now now now! There is no reason for anyone to be so negative!! What did people want to talk about on IRC? Sure we could all share when we first was turned on to Basia and other stuff that was covered on the list-serv.. If this list-serv was a virtual fan club news letter then most of topics here should be somehow related to basia. The way I took the IRC sessions, was as a virtual basia fan club get together. Where the fans that stopped by would get to know each other. Sure some of the topics would be about basia. I could see if there was late breaking news about basia would be covered at the chat. There is only so much information about basia. To all the people that got pissed because of the chat sessions, what did you expect? and as for some people showing up early.. (i was the first one there at about 4pm pst) is that bad? IRC is ment to be fun... if people that got mad because of side conversations, they should of started talking about basia or what ever topic that was on his/her mind... everyone should just relax and be happy.. if you don't like the way the IRC thing was going, then suggest topics that you would like to cover. There is no reason for basically yelling at people. I wasn't getting the sound files and I had a great time talking.... So Just Chill man! S. Lohr has some valid points, but I still recommend irc.warnerbro.com (6667) as a base for a chat site... It's only got MAYBE 10 channels running at a time -- lag time?? We don't know what is unless we have a MEGA MEGA combo chat (which we've done and had 800+ people on one channel). I am a master op on the #babylon5 channel and we would welcome others, plus if we went there, the MAIN master op can set us up a members-bot that will keep down any flooding/twit problems. This is a nice "quiet" place that will eliminate lag and we could set up permanent "camp" there if we wished. Beej ------------------------------ End of basia-digest V2 #35 **************************
