The album cover shows a little boy in some safari gear and a cute hat. Shame though that it hasn't appeared on CD and I've long lost my vinyl copy. A year or so back Verve put out a very nice 3-disc collection of Jobim, called `The Man From Ipanema' (sorry I don't have the product number). It is available through BMG at a substantial discount. Jobim's early material is recognizable to most casual listeners, and this package is very educational in attaching titles to tunes with their dates or origination. Also, as it has all been remastered you know you are hearing the best renditions of those early recordings. Even as late as 1986 his ability to work up wonderful material was undiminished. The very first cut on disc one, `Passerim' , is prime knock-socks-off stuff. I believe he passed away only a couple of years ago. (Did it work?) ;) Actually, my parents DID ask me to tape the program - HONEST! (Would a note along the lines of... "We asked Larry to tape this program [Signed] Larry's parents" prove it? :) ) Seriously though....Bachrach, the Carpenters, Mathis and some other "easy listening" artists were some of my early influences. Hey, I'm macho macho man enough to admit that I like A LOT of that stuff! But, I also like A LOT of pop, rock, r&b, jazz, country, orchestral, latin, big band...everything 'cept metal and its cousins. VHS is on its way. YES! I think that's part of Basia & Danny's troubles here in the US... Radio just does not quite know what to do with them. It's unfortunate, and I also think it shows that the US just does not have the "world sophistication" they *think* they have when it comes to music... Unfortunately... The contemporary jazz ("lite jazz") stations seem to play Basia on occasion, but even this is getting watered down to more pop vocals and less emphasis on jazz vocals. This annoys me, as I really do not want to listen to Whitney Houston on the same station as I hear Peter White, Basia, Doc Powell, Boney James, and Rick Braun. (frankly I wish they'd play more African and Brazilian music!) (HA!) > Its the same here in the BIG APPLE, with the jazz station 101.9 that I have tuned in whilst driving along. They even have lost touch with reality. I dont know where they are all day, but last week they said during one of the breaks that later that day it was going to rain. Well if they had looked out their flipping windows they would have seen that it had been raining for the past hour. Sunday though was the worst. I was out early in the morning when the DJ said that after 10 (am) they would be playing a PW triple header. Well got home switched on the radio (yes to the right station) and waited and waited at 11.30, I called up and asked what had happened. They did not seem to know what i was going on about. I think they were easier to classify and pigeon-hole for the first and maybe the second albums. The style was more clear-cut, IMO. Now they get thrown into the mix of other lost musical souls. The other night my wife and I were at our favorite Mexican restaurant and instead of the usual Mexican music that they had been playing they are now using one of the nameless satellite delivered services. Of all things, we heard "How Dare You". It really didn't fit the atmosphere of the place (Though I quietly dug it!). > > The contemporary jazz ("lite jazz") stations seem to play Basia on occasion, > but even this is getting watered down to more pop vocals and less emphasis > on jazz vocals. We're on the same page with this one, Diane. (Yay, Doc Powell!) My personal gripe is with all the Sade stuff you have to endure before you hear something worthwhile, though I am starting to like some of her stuff. They're wearing me down with the sheer volume of it. She has, however, a great backup band. I understand (their name is Sweetback) they have at least one CD out, BTW. Incidentally, our local "smooth jazz" station plays "Just Another Day" pretty often now, but have taken to calling it "a song by Basia". Apologies to Peter...
