So-neeee! So-neeee! In case no one here noticed, the Jumbotron scoreboard that crashed to the ice in Buffalo the other day was made by SONY. Seems another similar machine in North Carolina experienced the same (theoretical) problem which may have caused the Buffalo device to fall. However, it was stated by SONY techs that the NC glitch "could not possibly be repeated". So does Tony Mottola run the Jumbotron Division, too? The package was engineered by Daktronics of South Dakota and the one in Charlotte was made by American Sign and Indicator. The only thing common to both scoreboards is the Sony Jumbotron panels. However, the device does make up a hefty part of the 20-ton (in Buffalo's case, anyway) scoreboard. Latest word here is that a cable may have broken while it was being lowered. This caused a great imbalance in the structure and it broke apart. There were no injuries because the Arena has a strict policy of no one being near it when it is to be moved. A few weeks after the opening of the new Arena, I had attended a Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame dinner there. We happened to be seated directly under the scoreboard. And I thought the only thing potentially harmful that night was the under-done steak! Happy to be alive and kickin' in Buffalo, Den PS: Our "Smooth Jazz" station in Buffalo is FINALLY playing "Just Another Day". It was a very long wait. - ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Dennis J. It was a very long wait. Good to hear it! Frankly, we're in near-overkill out here in Milwaukee. Hey, since I'm in ga-ga fanboy mode - After seeing Peter White live, I picked up some incredible techniques, which (to the amazement of my family) caused me to suddenly be able to play 2 out of 3 PW songs quite well! (This happened about 15 minutes ago, so I'm still in total elation.) - -Robert ------------------------------ From: Phil Hall Date: Sun, 17 Nov 1996 22:29:37 -0500 (EST) Subject: Re: So-neeee! I'll admit my judgement was impaired when I saw `SONY' mentioned twice in the Boston Globe article this morning. Knee-jerk reactionaryism at its finest. Re-reading it, there is no mention of any other contractors, but I would suspect they built them using SONY specs. In any case, when I first learned of the disaster on the radio (TALK radio :-( sorry) on Friday, there was also the mention of a youth hockey game scheduled at the time the thing was moved, but cancelled - wow! They didn't mention the part about no one being allowed anywhere near it at those times it was to be moved. The picture in the paper shows a bunch of Lilliputians standing next to this gargantuan contraption. What a mess. > > A few weeks after the opening of the new Arena, I had attended a > Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame dinner there. We happened to be seated > directly under the scoreboard.
