Darn, whenever I'm whining, people think I'm complaining. Couldn't be more wrong: I enjoy whining, and it means I'm intellectually involved in something. However, I rarely complain about anything other than taxes. I unnerstand the touring thing. The effort expended MUST reflect the potential return, but that is usually only a record sales generator based on publicity gained by touring. A US Basia tour likely doesn't cover touring expenses, given her penchant for 3 to 6 thousand seat venues, (At least, any accountant worth his/her salt would show it as a loser). A Japan tour will likely take in more Yen per/date probably for a varietry of reasons: cheaper promo for SONY there (and based on how corporate influence reigns supremo in Rising Sun Land, actual expenses there are probably covered in large part by SONY's devoted friends, followers and out-sourcees; i.e. "Yamamato Fish Sauce presents THE BASIA TOUR!!!" in big Japanese characters all over the place), less competition for the touring big name (!) foreign artist, a tighter geographic spread resulting in lower tour costs period, and any number or other reasons why Basia would do well over there. And don't discount the reverse-xenophobic nature of Japanese popular culture: if a Western artist will make the effort to travel all the way to Tokyo to perform for US, then WE are being taken seriously, folks. You will find Nashville acts going over there these days precisely for the response they get from the locals, who merely don their 10 gallon hats and fringe shirts and yell yee-HAWW between numbers. And that is the key in Japan: if you go, they will be appreciative, and they will remember. But will they buy discs? I don't trust sales chart 'rankings' over there, myself. Especially since I learned of the cd rental shops they have over there, and the popularity of DAT recorders. I would say the charts either reflect RENTAL stats, or, are outright scams, arranged by the record company who like much of Japanese industry and government eat scruples for lunch. > > You want resources other than Peter White? Try Dee Anthony. He's paid to > keep track of these things. (heh!) No, Peter is just fine {:-) You might ask him, tho, how many gigs per US, Japan, Europe, Poland tours. Then when and if we EVER get sales stats in these markets, mabey some of the reality of Basia's efectiveness will filter out. Frankly, it bugs me to hear and read how poorly she does here in the states comparatively, when I frequently learn of new followers. Frinstance, I did a search recently through a new engine called Inference. It called up a music-piping service somewhere in the midwest (I think it feeds stores and such? Don't really know). The owner/manager wrote in his blurb that using charts to stock broadcasts was bogus, given the response he had been getting from listeners - who he referred to as "Basia and Anita Baker" fans. > > You know, speaking of crowds, Peter also said that the crowds in Poland were > simply amazing... I wondered why, while producing BOB, she failed to cover 'There's NO Business Like SHOW Business'. She's the only vocalist since Merman qualified to sing it, I think. She's not mentioned (unless I wasn't paying attention) an appreciation of Ella Fitzgerald, but I suspect deep down inside there lurks within Basia the repressed urge to record a disc 'o standards. Piano bar stuff. And if she feels inadequate, I wouldn't fault her for including her Mauritian twins and Dee in the effort to help out, even though purists might balk at this. Fact is, while Basia overflows with talent, she doesn't strike me as a technician, but I was struck by how well they all sounded together in '94 in front of the band.
