Its probably right under my nose, but I sure would love to know how well TSI and BOB have done in units. It was a poor choice. The only real single I heard on TSI was _Perfect Mother_. It is an excessively hummable tune, which is really all that counts. > > Phillip Hall: > RE: Ayn Rand. > I hang my head in shameful illiteracy > as I have never read any Ayn Rand. That's OK, as I had the time to indulge in reading when it was that I read a couple of her things. It ain't easy getting that kind of time, any more. Let's just say Michael Douglas's soliloquy on 'greed' in the movie _Wall Street_ epitomizes her message in her book, _Atlas Shrugged_. But the book is much more better, and has the added benefit of an extremely attractive heroine named Dagny Taggart, who rules. It is, I should warn the uninitiated, a conservative primer, so beware. :( > > RE: Management > I'm not sure I follow you. Who knows what happened when the contract between Basia and SONY was originally drawn up. When that occurred, management PEAKED, and the corporation took over. It stands to reason, then, that new negotiations should commence, and without the benefit/curse of precedence. Unless a new level of public awareness of and for Basia and her art emerges, then we can continue to expect a cycle of four-year-releases to develope, which means that St. B will produce a maximum of 10 albums, compared to Celine's 34, over their lifetimes. And I will guess that the profit vs. production ratio will reside in the corporation's favor UNTIL better management arrives and realigns the relationship, resulting in more promo per unit, and thus less profit for the suits. That's how it is in Hollywood, y'know. "If it wer'ent for PROMOTION, we'd be makin mony!" 'Course, REAL success for Basia would be never having to talk about how difficult her last name is to pronounce. RE: Dee Anthony. > Sorry - can't dis her management. > Never met the man. Tim Collins, I think his name is. Canned him, a billion bucks later. What had he done for them, lately? This guy Basia should check out. > she'll be one of the lucky few. Yeah, I remember him too... :) (nyuk nyuk nyuk!) Phil sed (to Jacki) -- >>I just received word: you have been promoted to Full Field Agent. You will >>notice the difference in your next pay check. Jacki answered Phil: >Alright! No more peanut butter & jelly sandwiches for me... I'm moving up to >baloney! Plenty of that around here, Jacki! ;) (heh) Okay... My call on all this silliness, you schtick it out there, I'm going to schtick it back... Can't resist a bad joke... heheh. To the subject at hand (and what was that???), concerning the management &etc... Well... Yes, it's difficult to be a manager. It also comes to mind that Basia's manager is difficult ("fat bearded jerk", haha!)... Is there a correlation? I wonder... I've known a few "difficult" managers in my time... Also know a few who aren't... I'm not sure what this means, because both types were successful at what they do... Maybe it means that you don't have to be difficult... Sometimes I think being a difficult manager puts people off. Management is doing whatever Danny and Basia wish, that is, if they're good management... Basia and Danny are *comfortable* working the way they do... Neither of them are workaholics... However things appear to the rest of us, I'm sure none of this "obscurity" bothers them... As long as they can make their music, go on tour, and rest on their laurels WHEN THEY WISH, all will be right in their world... It's *us*, remember, who are the ones who are pissing and moaning. *I* wish I had a manager. Then I wouldn't have to think about things, I could just go about my life and once in a while be reminded, "Diane, you have to pay a phone bill today" "You left the water running (iron on, computer on)" "Don't forget to finish that job" "Your flight is at two" "Eat lunch" "Mail that letter to your mother!!!" "Clean out the refrigerator"... A manager is kinda like your mother... Keeps track of things for you, so you don't have to... :) Promotion... Hmmmm... Sony, I've seen from being a Neil Diamond fan, has the *oddest* way of going about promoting some people... Some people/acts just FLOOD the market... Others merely trickle... Once a Sony rep said to a friend of mine, "Well, we don't need to promote him, his albums promote themselves." (fine, but what does this say about the flood of promotional material Sony has issued for Michael Jackson?) Sheesh... Okay, that makes sense, if they're selling okay without promotion why bother to spend more money promoting the product? More sales??? I don't know... Go figure... Yes, it would be nice if VH-1 decided to go back to it's original idea of playing videos for "the rest of us"... I'm hoping that BET-Jazz, the new jazz video station (call your local cable provider and request - DEMAND - this new station), will be featuring acts like and including Ms. T... Frankly, with the way this jazz/NAC genre is growing, there should be *something* for those of us who still appreciate intelligent music instead of sampling... Damned shame I don't have any money, or I'd do it myself (and probably make a bundle!). I am severely distressed that programming on the Wave, KTWV-FM Los Angeles, "pioneers" of this new age/jazz/NAC radio format, is getting blander and more onto the "soft, pop, love songs" format... Frankly I think their management is getting off the track here. Grrrrr......... We had another radio station for a while that was playing good lite jazz and r&b tunes... Played Basia quite a bit, which was a lovely surprise. Unfortunately they didn't seem to have the knack for getting advertisers, and they went under... A different format emerged, and they're playing really strange things, obscure stuff from the '70's/'80's/'90's... They've lasted longer than the jazz/r&b station... Go figure... WHO LISTENS TO THIS STUFF? (advertisers!)
