Lohr" Date: Fri, 26 Jul 1996 02:02:39 -0400 (EDT) Subject: Just Another Post Ok, got some more rumblings (pretty neutral ones, though) about "Just Another Day": First, in recognition of Diane FiSli's mentioning the difference in style in the White brothers' music - "Just Another Day," I think (now that I've listened to it about 10 times) is a song that would fit perfectly on a Basia album full of "Yearning"-type tracks. But, since her and Danny are usually pretty erratic on their song arrangements (sorry, but putting "More Fire Than Flame" directly after "Perfect Mother" had to have been one of the dumbest things I'd ever seen them do, in my opinion), one can only guess where a song like this would fit in. And for all you doubters out there: ok, sit your little butts down and get out THE SWEETEST ILLUSION and CARAVAN OF DREAMS. First, sit and listen to "Yearning." Then, put in CoD and listen to "Just Another Day." See? Told ya... With all the guitar work in it, "Just Another Day" is an obvious Peter White tune, but at the same time, its also not a non-"Basia" tune. Really, you put a piano in this song and its track 3 on the `98 album. No one has to know its a Peter White song... ;) Next - I noticed something kinda cool in the linear notes of "Caravan of Dreams." This might've been mentioned before but if it has, I missed it completely. Anyway, I was curious to see who it was who did the vocals with Basia on "Just Another Day" and I was surprised to see that it was Peter White himself. "Wow!" I must've said. "He's not bad." He's certainly 1000% better than those 3 horrid backup singers Basia used on the last tour (gosh, I hope none of them are secretly subscribed to this list). Sorry, but I call `em like I see `em. Bye for now... JSL. ========================== LET PRETZEL BOY PLAY!!!!! ========================== ------------------------------ From: "Diane F. It's neat to be able to say that I (sort of) know >someone mentioned on a worldwide release! Shux, 'twern't nothin'... ;-) Tho I might add that I *did* expend a little brainpower (inspiration?) in helping Peter title a tune... He had one that he was going to call "Bakstabba"... He gave me the titles before I'd heard any of the album, then played "Bakstabba" for me... I listened to the tune, and when it was over I told him that because of the title, I had a completely different image of what the tune would be like than what it actually sounded like... He said he wasn't sure he liked the title either... I suggested, "Bittersweet"... And he loved it . . . Serendipity . . . :) >BTW, what's up with the >typeface? My old eyes had a time reading it. :) I wouldn't have designed it that way... Don't ask me... (*they* didn't ask me, either!) (heh!) Sad part about it is that the person who did it probably got paid a whole lot of money for it, and has a huge reputation for being a great "graphics artist"... Some days I just want to scream... ~~~|-/ >Speaking of typos, I >couldn't find what you were referring to, It's not "accordian", it's accordion. >but I did notice that >Fayyaz ("go Fizz") Virji's name was misspelled. The notes have it as >Virgi. Oh dang... You know, I had it right when I sent in the finals on the liner notes, but I find some of my copies are wrong and some are right -- Maybe I grabbed the wrong copy to give to Peter... Ergo, this one was my fault... (Diane hangs her head in shame!) :( > Hey, how about a PW mail list? There's been minor discussion about it. Not sure where we're going on it, but I'll try to keep you all informed... Is there really enough interest? > Love it, glad I bought it, GOOD! :) (Diane beams with "maternal" pride) Basia's vocal is lovely... Haunting... What's funny is I went to a local music store -- A fairly good-sized chain, actually, Blockbuster Music, and asked for the album... They didn't have it yet... Go figure... When I worked for the Wherehouse (another music chain), we always had releases on time, and Blockbuster never did... Looks like they're continuing the tradition... Hope you can find it when you look for it! Thanks for the thoughts, Den! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~ Diane F. They sound good together. Now, what I would truly like to hear, would be a collaborative effort with just the White Bros and Ms T, with minimal musical support. Wouldn't that be a treat! > > What's funny is I went to a local music store -- A fairly good-sized chain, > actually, Blockbuster Music, and asked for the album... They didn't have it > yet... Go figure... > I got my copy last night at Music Plus, which used to be Blockbuster Music (still the same company, I think). After I grabbed my copy there were only two left on the shelf. I gotta believe that they are selling well in Buffalo. PW gets a LOT of air time on the Smooth Jazz station in town. BTW, I realized after I sent the last post that the list of people PW sited must have been awfully tough to come up with, even though it is lengthy. Sounds like a Roach "If you could only choose..." exercise. But back to the official business of this list - did anyone see Drunk On Love yet? At last, I have a "first" under my belt ;) Waitin' for the weekend in Buffalo, Den - ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Dennis J. I was amazed to see it in stock (as also Lyle Lovett's new disc, and scarfed 'em both). As I waited in line to pay I was a bit miffed to see St. B listed second to some no-name, (I'm sure he never heard of me, either) until I counted on my fingers and realised there was some aphabetical preference, here. OK, so at home I tossed it into the machine and scrolled to #6 and listened to the cut at least four times before I began to develope an appreciation for it. That was too many times, I'm afraid. It's not a bad tune - but it's not the right White. PW's album is PW's album, and it is a really terrific set, and he is a GREAT guitarist (his versatility is his strength) and writer. But I guess I look for my favorite artist to continue producing work that absorbs me from the get go. That she agreed to do the song on Peter's album is of course a tribute to him, and that's as it should be. The Basia magic for me has always been the melody accompanying her unique vocals, and, to me, Danny provides the spark. Jacki's comment on listening to music with no vocals being a new experience she doesn't necessariy welcome deserves a hearty `Join the Club'! When a lot younger, I and my friends would SHOUT the vocals of all the songs at dances to each other. It was important to memorize the words, of course, so I paid close attention to lyrics. Then, with the advent of stereo systems and headphones, it became evident that as I sang along anybody anywhere near would run screaming from the house, I was so awful. So, it developed that at most I occasionally hum along very quietly, and naturally the words themselves grew less important. I guess it was about then I began to become interested in jazz. Oh yeah, I was interested to see Peter trying to shoot the pier on an Ovation. Funny, I don't recall seeing him use one during the Basia gigs live or on the tube.
