Lohr" Date: Tue, 26 Mar 1996 01:24:47 -0500 (EST) Subject: "Similar Sounds" Irony With a lot of the recent postings dealing mostly with Derek's question, I found this incident rather ironic: I was driving back up here to Towson today in the Roachmobile - after flipping through the pile of CDs I had with me in the car, I decided to put in Swing Out Sister's "Get In Touch With Yourself" CD. My companion, who was also the fellow who was forced to go with me to the Basia concert back in `94 (and he's also rather familiar with Basia's work, again mostly by force :D) stayed noticeably quiet through the first two tracks, "Get In Touch With Yourself" and "Notgonnachange." But when track three, "Am I the Same Girl," started, he finally muttered, "...is this some new Basia stuff or something?" I told him who it was. But a moment later, he gave me a cockeyed look and said, "This IS Basia, isn't it!" Again, I said no - but he wouldn't listen. "Stop @#%*ing with me, dude...this IS Basia!" This went back and forth for a few moments until he insisted I stop the CD player and take out the disc to show it to him. So I did, and in the process nearly splattered us all over I-695, and he finally shut up... well, only for the moment, actually, because then he started driveling on about who came first, Basia or Swing Out Sister (ala who's ripping off who - forgive him, he's just one of those types). Then I had to shut THAT one up with "Matt Bianco came out before BOTH of them so just shut up." And since Basia was in Matt Bianco, well, I guess we know who won that one. :D The moral of the tale? Well, if that story isn't testimonial enough for the similar Basia-esque (or vice-versa depending on who you're a bigger fan of) style found in some of Swing Out Sister's music than I don't know what is. Ok, if you lithograph people won't come to me, I'll partially come to you: If you can, I highly suggest you go to your nearest CD shop or bookstore (Tower will have it, so will Borders) and pick up the March 29th issue of "Goldmine" magazine (Todd Rundgren is on the front, though he looks more like Ozzy Osbourne than Todd Rundgren :D) - for those of you who don't know what "Goldmine" is, its a big bimonthly collection of CD dealers' price lists for rare CDs and/or music collectibles. For those who ordered lithographs, you should be aware of the "Smogtown Records" pricelist for collectibles (for sale) which appears on page 181. I won't say anything more than that in a public setting. I may be overreacting about this, but I won't know for sure until I hear some reactions from some of my companions who also ordered lithographs. YOUR OPINION WOULD BE APPRECIATED. If you are unable to find a copy of "Goldmine" then I'll be more than happy to explain this situation to you via private e-mail. BUT I NEED TO HEAR FROM YOU FIRST!!! Thank you all for your time. JSL.
