Of course, you will all have to come to Buffalo! :D As much as I would LOVE to drive the Roachmobile up to wonderful BUFFALO (ahh, the way it just rolls off the lips :D) on a hot summer's day, I had in mind something more along the lines of possibly one of the bound-to-be- crowded NYC shows. Or, since we are spread out so thinly across the country and around the world, perhaps different regions can have their own get togethers - or maybe we shouldn't count our chickens before they hatch. Frankly, I can't wait to go to another show - and not just for the obvious reason, but also to see the loonies come out again...I only wish they'd allow video cameras in the venue - not to tape the show, but instead, to tape the crowd I met at the show. I would've had enough material from the '94 show to do an independent horror flick. Plus, perhaps the weather will be good enough this time around to warrant a tailgate party, so we can get the straight fans loaded and get them interacting with the loonies - I plan on being much more prepared this time around. :D Toodles! I'm sorry if you have already covered this prior to my signing on to the list, but what exactly were your experiences? Both of the Basia shows I went to were populated primarily by middle-aged, white wine drinking, severe underbite (just stick your bottom teeth out and say something like "Isn't Spyro Gyra just the jazziest thing you've heard" and you'll get what I mean) types. I felt like a homosexual Mexican illegal immigrant at a Pat Buchanan rally. ------------------------------ From: Philip B Hall Date: Sun, 24 Mar 1996 23:29:02 -0500 (EST) Subject: Re: The 1997 (or '98 or '99 or '00 or '01) Tour On Sun, 24 Mar 1996, Jason wrote: > >Frankly, I can't wait to go to another show - and not just for the > >obvious reason, but also to see the loonies come out again...I only wish > >they'd allow video cameras in the venue - not to tape the show, but > >instead, to tape the crowd I met at the show. I have covered it before, but I just love talking about it (the regulars are probably going: "Oh geez, he's talking about that concert AGAIN!"). > Both of the Basia shows I went to were populated primarily by middle-aged, > white wine drinking, severe underbite (just stick your bottom teeth out and > say something like "Isn't Spyro Gyra just the jazziest thing you've heard" > and you'll get what I mean) types. Gosh, sounds like Thurston Howell the IIIrd from "Gilligan's Island." The crowd at the show I saw was severly mixed - but I figure that's because this part of Maryland is a severly mixed area. I tend to think now that all the Thurston Howell types (aka escapees from a Yanni live video) were all Spyro Gyra fans. And I'm also starting to think that a lot of the more mediocre, on the fence-type fans were treating it as a sort of mini-festival, hence all the modern-jazz lunatics who were there for spite: Weird Woman: "I think modern jazz is the best kind of music on the radio." Roach and Roach's friend: "Uh-huh." This was also the same woman who said she met some guy in a Maryland record store who said that his roommate had dated Basia (yeah right) while Basia was here in the States back in '81 and that Basia herself had lived in Maryland for a short time...I tried telling this woman that, according to the lexicon of interviews, Basia only ever lived in Chicago - but she insisted on believing this guy. Then, as a joke, I pointed to my friend and said, "Well, he's dated Basia too." She gave me a total look of disgust and walked off - I never saw her again. Anyway, there were a handful of obvious lunatics mixed into the crowd - I have one hilarious and horrific tale (which I refuse to post to the list because its so disgusting - only Dirk has ever heard it) of this one gentleman we were fortunate/unfortunate enough to meet before the show. During the show, this couple in front of us (who had front row center seats (yes, we were second row (slightly off) center - wonderful seats!)) kept on getting up, leaving, and coming back - my companion and I were convinced that they were going out to their car to have sex because whenever they WERE at their seats, they couldn't keep their hands off of one another...I guess the more romantic songs just do that to some people. Anyway, we ran into two look-alikes (one was a male in drag!) and another handful of psychopaths (people with, like, shrines and stuff)...but with the one exception most of these people were just sorta funny, not sick. > I felt like a homosexual Mexican illegal immigrant Well, are you? :D Toodles!
