Anyone who buries it in their CD collection is cheating themselves. Another vote for TSI! As soon as I first spun it up I was enchanted -- the songwriting is outstanding, Basia's never sounded better, and the songs themselves have a much warmer feel to them (most likely because she's using more live instruments and musicians instead of electronics - -- hey, I love electronics myself, but her music sounds soooo much better with real instruments, I've decided). I personally consider TSI far superior to LWNY. TAT is still my favorite, however. To those of us near the Great > Lakes, it seems about as distant as Basia's next album. It's been a cooooold > winter so far!) Firstly, let's look at the last question on "The Sweetest Interview" (for those of you out there who don't have it yet, I've been offering free copies so GET ON THE BALL!): someone who responds to that question with a lackadaisical (at best) response of "...there might be one more album" isn't someone who has three or four more albums left in them. Frankly, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for there to be even ONE more album. We're all Basia fans and no one wants to hear that this album or that album may be the LAST album, but sooner or later we're going to have to face up to the fact that that's it...no more songs, no more promos, no more anything, be it good or bad or whatever. This is a human being we're dealing with, with wants and needs, and if she doesn't want to do this anymore then god bless her and I wish her well on whatever she wants to do with the rest of her life. We're at the twilight of fandom, and one more album will give us a nice round total of some 40+ songs which, in my opinion, is a pretty sufficient amount for an artist who isn't known for being that prolific. Secondly, why is the idea of a Danny White solo album so ludicrous? If Peter can do it, why couldn't Danny? Again, going by some of the stuff which was said on "The Sweetest Interview," Danny White sounds like someone who is dedicated to his profession. Hell, look at that interview with Basia from Gopherspace that I posted a few months ago - Danny's dedication to his music was apparently one of the factors that pulled him and Basia apart romantically. This tells me that Danny White sounds like someone who would find some way to just keep on going, reguardless of Basia's involvement. And if not a Danny White solo album, then maybe a duet with Peter, or even a new band altogether (ie something reminiscent of Matt Bianco or a Blue Rondo a la Turk revival). I mean, let's face it: Danny is half of the music. He doesn't sound as "lazy" as Basia says she herself is. I think Danny White is a musician-in-hiding who has a lot to offer and hasn't really had a chance to because of his musical loyalty to Basia. But I also think his chance is coming. I know I'll be waiting...I also know that I won't be the only one. Toodles! This is... ============================================================================= Like ohmigod! Well, as a "lurker" in this mailinglist, I think I'll finally have a say. I was a mad keen Basia fan through T&T and LWNY. I was hanging out for the local release of her then-newest album, TSI. I finally saw it, bought it and straight away took it home to listen to. What a huge, terrible, boring disappointment it was. Gone was her happy, catchy and different Latin-american sound, replaced with a mournful folk tone. I think I've listened to it two or three times since I bought it, compared to dozens and dozens of times for the previous two albums. All this talk of BOB and I haven't even been bothered yet to go and see if I can get it as an import- TSI put me off. Besides, I think (but not 100% sure) that my Matt Bianco WSAYO has Basia's vocals all through it anyway, as we got the European disc here and it's in most bargain CD bins. BUT (I'm allowed to disagree), to say that TSI was >"mournful" compared to the "happy" years of T&T and LWNY... I have three I am a BIG fan of the Matt Bianco release "Whose Side Are You On". That got me into Basia. Time and Tide was Matt Bianco part 2- I loved it as well. LWNY was good but there was way too much time between releases. As for The Sweetest Illusion, I must say that it is not the greatest of albums but I still think it is good (perhaps, IMO, better than LWNY). >And, as I've said before, if LWNY were released a mere 6 months after it >initially was, this list might've been a very different (and much more >crowded) place. If only they had waited to release LWNY until Billboard's AGREED! The lapse between albums is not good. Also, before Basia was switched to 550 Music (a sub-label of Sony) for her SI release, the promotion, albeight not great, was far better than now. I am still amazed at how I can call a persons direct line at any time of the day and only get his voice mail! Perhaps Basia is settled with what she has done and that is it. I think that she is not finished and will make a good studio record- hopefully soon! SIDE NOTE: As for the lithographs and promo CDs, I am still awaiting confirmation of their order- hang in there. And thanks to all who ordered. So yes there are a lot more people out there than you think there are. I thought you might be interested in the fact that a youth/musical group that I am involved with will be performing "An Olive Tree" this summer. Now before you dismiss this, let me explain. The Crossmen are a drum and bugle corps that performs at over 35 competitions each summer across the country, culminating this year at the 1996 Summer Music Games (we call it Finals) at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Florida. A drum and bugle corps is sort of like a marching band..... but they only have percussion and horns (hence the name) and their level of performance is much higher due to the amount of practice involved. There are 128 members (ideally) in each corps ranging in age from about 15 to 21, and they do a 10 1/2 minute performance on a football field. In addition to "An Olive Tree," Crossmen will also perform "The Sultan Fainted" by New York Voices as well as "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square" and "Birdland" by Manhattan Transfer. Crossmen has a long tradition of performing outstanding jazz related shows (Although they have played other genres from time to time). In the past they have performed music by Ellington, New York Voices, Pat Metheny, Paul Winter and others. As one of the TOP 12 corps in the world I assure you it will be a great experience to see them. Please don't think that it will be a hokey marching band performance. Drum corps do professional, almost Broadway quality performances ON A FOOTBALL FIELD!!! They are currently showing the 1995 Summer Music Games on various PBS stations around the country, check your listings or call your local PBS station to find out when they are showing it in your area. It is extremely difficult to explain extactly what drum corps is in just a few paragraphs, but you can learn more about Crossmen and Drum Corps International (DCI) at the following web sites: Crossmen http://taurus.wcupa.edu/crossmen/homepage.htm DCI http://www.mordor.com/dci/ The Crossmen's page needs to be updated, this summer's show has not yet been announced on the WWW. Each of the above sites is linked to numerous other drum corps and their related sites. One thing that may interest you further. In 1990, Crossmen played a show composed entirely of music by a brand new, little known jazz-vocal group called New York Voices. The drum corps community was intrigued and ran out and bought almost every available copy of their debut CD. I am almost positive that the Crossmen's performance was directly responsible for a HUGE amount of CD sales. Which may be of course be a drop in the bucket when you look at the bigger picture, but it sure helps. I don't know how well I have explained all of this but I was personally delighted to hear that the corps was playing Basia (they are the first corps to play any of her music). If you have any questions please feel free to ask! Christine M. Healey ------------------------------ End of basia-digest V1 #26 **************************
