I drove 200+ miles today just to see Peter White's concert in Tampa. Although I've never heard of Kirk Whalun or Dave Camp, I liked them both... and when the 3 of them all get together on stage, you can tell they really enjoy playing together... makes for a good show. If he's playing somewhere by y'all, I recommend you go and see him. (Di... I'm sold... and I think my girlfriend that I dragged along is sold too). At one point PW was sitting on the edge of the stage. When he got up he tripped over a speaker and fell down (great "save" tho). And then he goes to the microphone and makes a comment that he was once in Poland playing with Basia and fell off the stage. But... he pronounced Basia like I don't. "Ba" as in "bad", where I've been pronouncing the "Ba" like in "box". So what is it.... Bash-a, or Bah-sha? Of course it could just be his accent, but I figured he ought to know, right? It comes down to a sort of "tomato" vs. "tomahto" regional type deal but most eastern european/SLAVIC (not Baltic) dialects pronounce it with a soft vowel - BAH-sha. And if you don't believe me, try this out: Think about names like Sasha, Pasha, etc. Russian or other slavic diminutives. The name Basia isn't any different - its an affinative - the vowel is always a soft one. Play it this way - say the name "Alfred Von Idiot." Take the "ah" sound in "von" and put it in the first syllable of Basia's name. Its not BAAH-sha... only sheep go BAAH. The vowel is soft. And if that doesn't make any sense, just go out and buy "A New Day" - she says her name during an interview segment near the beginning. End of story. Peter White can bite me ;) Toodles! They still don't have a good commercial connection to her music. It has really worked out for me, though. I'm a great fan of Aleksandr Rosenbaum. Only a couple of his albums are available in the States, so they have been sending me AR tapes and CD's in exchange for Basia albums.
