I was just taking a look at the discography, and it seems to me to be missing a few items. Of course, it still says version 1.00, so maybe there is a later one. So, if that's the case, where can I find the latest one?? My favourite Basia single must be the 10" white vinyl double groove Promises. Geez, anyone else want to bust my chops about the discography? Ok, let me try to explain something to all the non-US fans, namely the Europeans and the Japanese, on the list: Back when TIME AND TIDE was released, you guys (more the Europeans than the Japanese) were treated to all sorts of different goodies when it came to singles. From what I can tell, it broke down something like this (at least in Europe): Single X = 2 12" singles 1 10" single 1 or 2 7" singles 1 or 2 CD singles 1 Novelty item (pic disc, WHITE VINYL DOUBLE GROOVE, etc.) and 1 or 2 promos PER FORMAT Total = 10 to 15 (though I doubt it ever got as high as 15) possible items per single, including promos You know what we got in the US? It breaks down something like this: Single X = MAYBE 1 12" single 1 or 2 7" singles 1 cassette single NO CD SINGLE (and if anyone even TRIES to tell me that there was a US CD single commercially released from T&T I will kill you, your family, your dog, etc. BECAUSE THERE WERE NONE). And even if there were you should've SAID SOMETHING SOONER! (but there ain't anyway) 1 promo per format, MAYBE Total = as few as 2 or as many as 7 possible items per single The European system of numbering singles was fairly simple to figure out. Each single was given a "BASH" number which appeared on all separate formats: BASH1=? BASH2=New Day For You BASH3=Prime Time TV BASH4=Promises BASH5=Time and Tide Now, the only thing I could ever come up with when it came to BASH1 was that THE ALBUM ITSELF was dubbed "BASH1." If someone could clear that up I'd appreciate it. Anyway, for every "BASH" number you see there, there were countless singles: 12", 10", 7" CD5, etc. Now, if you go back and look at the discography you'll notice that there may only be one or two formats listed per "BASH" number, in which case, yes, THERE ARE INDEED A LOT OF GAPS. Realistically, I figure its only 40% of the way complete. I THOUGHT I had the US stuff under control, though, until all these US 12" releases started popping up. PLUS, to REALLY complicate matters, its starting to appear as though EACH SEPARATE COUNTRY in Europe (or, at least in France, Germany, UK, etc.) had different sets of singles! Bottom line: the Time and Tide stuff is a big mess - and that's BEFORE I even get to the Japanese singles from LONDON WARSAW NEW YORK, which is ANOTHER big mess. 40% complete - which means (I think) that for every two items that appear on the list, there are three OTHER things out there which AREN'T on the list. The discography was assembled mostly from Ken's original posting and it was easy to check because it was comprised mostly of items that I already had and, hence, knew existed. And the more mysterious items were common knowledge anyway. But how do I know if there was a UK 10" yellow polka-dot pic disc with the label notes printed it sanskrit? Point is, I don't, and I certainly can't assume this stuff exists because there doesn't seem to be any set pattern with ANY single. Plus, if I start assuming things I'm still missing serial numbers and single content... A BIG %$*(ING MESS. I've begged people in the past to post items which they might have which aren't on the discography but either no one has anything (except for all the rumbling recently about the 12" singles) or no one wants to say anything (except, of course, for Lars-Ove, and the aforementioned 12" owners). To Lars-Ove and anyone else lurking out there with a ton of 10" singles in your closet: PLEASE POST *ANYTHING* YOU HAVE WHICH MAY NOT BE IN THE DISCOGRAPHY. BTW, before anyone else says anything - yes, I know there are some mistakes and they are being taken care of. Toodles! I'm new to the list, and was surprised to see that the discography was missing items, when I thought I didn't have any special items, at least when I see all the cool remixes that I don't have. Anyway, I will look up the timings and other information on the records that I have, so you can add to the discography. /Lars-Ove (who won't open his mouth again for some time) ------------------------------ Date: 09 Dec 96 14:36:38 EST From: A-C MEXICANA <74173.3042@CompuServe.COM> Subject: Basia video Hello everobody. Yes yes, thank you Mr. Helper. ;) >I'm new to the list, and was surprised to see that the discography was missing items Yes, you're probably used to seeing 100% complete super awesome discographies like the Level 42 one by Lazlo Nibble (relevant to you, Lars-Ove, since I know you're such a big L42 fan) - how that guy does it, I have no idea. >when I thought I didn't have any special items, at least when I see all the >cool remixes that I don't have. BTW, Dennis, I realized in a message you sent to me that you mentioned seeing a portion of the "Yearning" video at, once again, a Sears store. Any chance of getting a hold of that one? I got part of that video on tape via a commercial for the album (from Camelot Music) and I must say, it looked "el supremo corny." Perhaps that is why VH-1 denied those videos airplay - they just weren't "cool" enough. "Yearning" appeared corny, "Drunk on Love" was just unobtrusive (a little TOO much Basia for the everyday viewer at home), and I have yet to see ANY of "Third Time Lucky," but something tells me that, judging from the "meaning" of the song, we're going to be seeing more Kevin Robinson. That's right, if you haven't guessed already, the "Time and Tide" live CD single came today in the mail from my new best friend, Hideki. ;) Anyway, "More Fire Than Flame" and "An Olive Tree" were splendid. Sucks, doesn't it? Now, let's give Sony the benefit of the doubt - they couldn't fit everything onto one CD, but they didn't have to stiff the US and European fans out of these two tracks. If I were you, I'd be on the phone with (yeah, I know, I know) CD Banzai right now trying to get a hold of this single. Now, I know its readily available (unlike that whole "Water of March" bullcrud), so if they can't get a hold of this one they're total failures. BTW, for anyone curious as to which single to order, its the "ESCA-6318" single. CD Banzai identifies it as something along the lines of "Brand New Single," which, for all intents and purposes, it is. Oh, and for anyone curious, the CD packaging was pretty boring. For some reason, Sony seems intent on minimizing the pictures of Basia on her singles as much as possible. The cover photo is about the same size as the "Drunk On Love" one was here in the States - about an inch wide and maybe two inches long. I would put sound clips up on the homepage but as I mentioned before, I'm having problems recording files with my sound card. If I can work something out, I'll put those two and "Angels Blush" up for your listening pleasure. Toodles! JSL. ------------------------------ End of basia-digest V1 #303 ***************************
