I get ticked off every morning when I check my email and find nothing from the smoe group here... Anyway, I discovered something rather weird the other day - this is a kinda long story so you might want to whip out the popcorn and get comfortable (I might've spared you the boring details if SOMEONE ELSE HAD BOTHERED TO POST SOMETING TO THE LIST, but since you are all dead, I have to occupy this budgeted time some way)... There was a show which used to be on the BBC many years ago ('82-84) called "The Young Ones." For those of you out there who have a cable tv system that carries Comedy Central, you're probably already familiar with this show. Its a comedy - a very British comedy - of which I am a big fan. Anyway, CBS/FOX just released all the episodes on videocassettes recently and me, being the big fan that I am, had to run down to Tower Records and snatch all of them up (there were only 4 tapes, so I'm not THAT psycho). A friend of mine, who is also a big fan, and I decided to sit down and watch all 6 hours worth on Saturday afternoon. Now, in each episode there's a musical guest (usually a full band) that performs a song (why they did this I have no idea - after all, it was a sitcom, not a variety show. Plus, the whole thing came out kinda hoakey - it would be like interrupting an episode of Seinfeld with a performance by Hootie and the Blowfish... very awkward). In one episode in particular, there was a performance by an all-female band called "Amazulu" (no, I've never heard of them before, either). Now, we had been fast-forwarding through each of the musical performances, but during this particular episode we happened to misplace the remote control - while looking for it, I stopped for a moment to watch the act only because they sounded so bad and I, naturally, had to rag on them. I don't know what the song was called, but they sounded like a more reggae-ish, low-budget, Matt Bianco. Then I noticed the guitarist. I looked closer. I looked again. When we found the remote, without a word, I slowed the tape down to frame by frame and just - couldn't believe my eyes. Then my companion finally muttered, "That looks like Basia." In that moment, I knew I wasn't nuts. First of all, I got about 5 or 6 video capture jpegs from the tape which I'll be putting on my homepage sometime Monday night so you can all see them for yourselves. A couple are better than the others, but they were all I could manage to get because there were so few close-ups of her. Now, you may all be wondering, "Well, Jeff? Is it or isn't it Basia?" If its not Basia, then its a pretty damn close look-alike. But one must wonder the following: if it IS Basia, then: a) Why is she playing (or pretending to play) a guitar? b) Why is she playing with this weirdo all-female UB40-meets-Matt-Bianco type band? Since this particular episode was dated 1984, its very possible that the episodes were filmed sometime in 1983 and that what we're seeing is Basia slightly before "Whose Side Are You On?" was released - I mean, the "Departures" single makes it obvious that Basia was doing other things in 1983 besides recording and doing pre-promo work for "Whose Side Are You On?" But...Amazulu? Incidentally, when you see the photos, remember that the episode was from '83-'84 and that Basia had short hair back then (see Matt Bianco single covers on my homepage). By the way, even though we must've watched the sequence 20 times, the song never got any better (and it doesn't sound like any of Basia's singing in the background vocals). Check the homepage at around midnight and the photos should be up. Remember that YOUR OPINION COUNTS. In other words, if you think I'm nuts don't be afraid to tell me. Toodles for now.
