Lohr" Date: Tue, 16 Jul 1996 12:17:59 -0400 (EDT) Subject: "Half a Minute" Moment of Clarity Greetings everyone! I hope everyone has survived the most recent void which has plagued this list... anyway, I told you if you didn't come up with something fast, I would. Stop screaming, please - you had your chance. I have a bit of a tale to relate - kinda sick, but, I feel its appropriate. Now, before I continue, I want you to sit and ask yourself, "hey, have I EVER really listened that closely to the lyrics in 'Half a Minute?'" If you have and you've studied them for a bit, you may be able to tell what I'm about to get at - frankly, this may be a common knowledge type thing and I might've just been an idiot for not picking up on "it" until now, but - I don't know. Anyway, here we go: Last Saturday afternoon, I was in the Roachmobile on my way to the beach (Ocean City, MD) with Kelli, my significant other. Now, during the two hour trip, we pass through a desolate part of Maryland that doesn't have much in the way of radio stations, so - by the time we got to this part of the state, we were ready to start listening to CDs since the radio had gotten so crappy. Me, being the obvious gentleman, let Kelli pick the first CD... she said she wanted to listen to something kinda jazzy, so I offered a typical Miles Davis CD. "Nahh," she said, "too hardcore." So then I mistakenly offered Spyro Gyra. "#$*& no!" was her response. Then she continued with: "I want something kinda upbeat." I told her that the only thing I really had that fit that criteria was WHOSE SIDE ARE YOU ON. Surprisingly, she took it. Anyway, the CD started playing and we were on our way. We exchanged a bit of conversation through most of the beginning of the CD, but things had quieted down by the time "Half a Minute" came on. It played - I didn't think much of it at the time, except for noticing that the "gofizz gofizz gofizz..." part was nicely absent and has always been nicely absent from this version. The song finished and began to fade out. Then, Kelli laughed. "That's really sick!" I looked at her. "What is?" "That song!" "What song?" "That last song! That's gross!" "You mean 'Half a Minute?'" "Yeah." "What do mean, 'its gross?'" "Listen to the lyrics for Christ's sake!" At the time, I still had no idea as to what she was talking about. So, I hit the back track button on the CD player and listened to it again, this time paying close attention (for the first time ever) to the lyrics: What is there to say when all the love has slipped away in half a minute? There is always something we can blame but in the end its just the same. Suddenly, you'll find yourself alone. Half a minute. - I still didn't get it, so I kept listening. What is there to say when every dream just fades away in half a minute? Every explanation we can find will never change it, we are through. Suddenly you'll find yourself alone. Half a minute. - "So what?" I said when the song stopped. "What, you mean you still don't get it!" she cried. "What is there to get?" I'll spare you the exact sentence that Kelli said next - here it is in a more tamer version: "Its about a guy who can't keep in his 'excitement'." In other words, Kelli is convinced that "Half a Minute" is a song about a couple that broke up because the man suffered from, well, premature ejaculation. Frankly, citing the quirkyness of early Matt Bianco, I don't totally deny her claim... Believe it or not. Toodles! JSL. ------------------------------ From: "Diane F. Fisli wrote: > Well, now that you mention it... ;) > > How about a list of songs you'd like to hear (SEE!) Basia record (cover)... Hmm - do we really want this? I mean, we all saw (heard) what happened when Basia decided to redo "Half a Minute" - out of that came the infamously bad Ben's Phone/Alka-Seltzer Mix of an otherwise classic (and as I'm now convinced, kinda sick) song. So, in otherwords, a list of songs Basia and Danny could possibly destroy: 1. "Calling You" from the Bagdad Cafe sountrack. Often a favorite of showoff vocalists - I heard a rumor awhile back that she did this song when she was on VH-1's New Visions program, but I have yet to talk to anyone else who's seen it. Frankly, I don't think she has the vocal ability to do it - I think if she were to try it, it would probably come out sounding very nasal. (sorry) 2. "Great Gig in the Sky" from Pink Floyd's DARK SIDE OF THE MOON. -What? I can dream, can't I? But again, I don't think she'd have the vocal ability to do it. 3. "Departures" - I know I'm the only person on the planet who liked this song, but I'd love to see Basia redo it and see how it would change from 1983-Basia to 1996-Basia. 4. "One Bourbon, One Scotch, and One Beer" by George Thoroughgood. Oh, COME ON! Tell me you wouldn't pay top dollar to get THAT one as a Japanese promo! That'll do it. I'm not big on oldies, so I'll let Phil and Dennis take care of those. ;D > And a list of titles/subjects of future songs... Oh, Diane! What a WONDERFUL idea! Here goes: 1. Happy Days - with this woman's apparently constant chipperness, I think this one's a safe bet. Plus, its corny enough of a title that it'll fit the `98 album to a tee. 2. Fourth Time Lucky - A song which Basia will write and dedicate to her newfound love, Phil Hall. 3. The Kandinski (is Painted on Both Sides) - Since Basia is such a big fan of the stage play "Six Degrees of Separation," I figured this was a safe bet. She'd probably make it about how she finds herself split between being an international pop star and a "housewife." 4. Rachel's Divorce - Need I say more? That'll do it for me. Toodles!
