The things I WANT to recall are those I really have to work at. My phone number, for example. The stuff that pours out at random is part of the circuitry - can't be helped, goes beyond memory. Like saying 'SW Eighth Street' automatically, instead of 'Calle Ocho'. Trying to _forget_? I wish I could forget about Hootie, but you won't let me. They had a couple excerpts of an interview with her (soundbites, really) where she pronounces her full name & remarks about how hard it is to pronounce. What the hell, I'll transcribe it for your edification. Basia was the last mention at the end of the piece, so I'll pick it up there: - ----- VOICEOVER: Singer Basia does have a last name -- BASIA: (enunciating) "Basia Che-che-lev-ska" ... It's a hard name, even for polish people, it's a really hard name ... VO: ... which is why her record company told her to simply go by the name "Basia". BASIA: That's complicated enough ... people always mispronounce it: "BAH-see-ah, BAY-zha" ... VO: That's okay, as long as they can find her records in the store. Dunno why this email finally decided to show up -- I sent it Thursday and figured it got lost in the void, especially after all the discussion over the CNN piece began on Friday.
