Hi All, I have been a BAsia fan since her single Promises was released in 1987 and have followed her career from the Matt Bianco days. I am a new comer to this list and am wondering if anyone knows of a Basia Fan Club and other details like tour dates. Look forward to hearing from anyone, maybe Basia herself? :) Thanks, Meng. ------------------------------ From: Philip B Hall Date: Fri, 31 May 1996 08:26:58 -0400 (EDT) Subject: Re: A Really Long and Complaintive Post... I can see him directing Basia vids alrite. Phil, are you ok? Should we be worried? Are you having a heart attack? A stroke? Aneurysm? Spike Jonze is the guy who directed a couple cool videos (Beastie Boys' "Sabotage" and that "Buddy Holly" song by Weezer) and now everyone thinks he's some sort of film God. Frankly, all I see is a guy with a good sense of humor and some luck. He ain't all that - did ya see the video he directed for Bjork? Yuck-o city. AND ON A MORE RELEVANT NOTE: Our new friend in the UK, Meng, asked if there was a fan club. Truth is, Meng, we're not sure. If I had to guess I'd say probably not - that Biggin Hill address on the albums is probably just a correspondence address. Plus, Basia appeals mostly to an age group that typically isn't the fan-club type. Tour dates: nothing yet. Be patient...you have to be if you want to be a Basia fan. :) And as for hearing from Basia herself - ha, wouldn't that be the day. Toodles! I couldn't believe they would have the guts to do an alternative video in the style of an old Hollywood musical. I had a grin on my face for the whole thing (and I hate old Hollywood musicals). And "Sabotage" is the Citizen Kane of videos. But it helps if you have an appreciation for the unintentional humor in Quinn Martin productions. ------------------------------ From: Philip B Hall Date: Fri, 31 May 1996 17:58:26 -0400 (EDT) Subject: Re: Spike Jonze and the Question of a Fan Club On Fri, 31 May 1996, J.S. If answering 'yes' to any of those questions qualified me for a week off or two, I would gladly admit to all of the above ailments. Unfortunately, I am as healthy as a clam in two feet of mud. I am a bit broken up by your concern, tho. > Spike Jonze is the guy who directed a couple cool videos (Beastie Boys' > "Sabotage" and that "Buddy Holly" song by Weezer) and now everyone thinks > he's some sort of film God. See, the original posting had it _Spike Jones_, which is different. I am sure I am the only one here who recalls him at all. He made a few '40's movies, then had the TV show I remember seeing (with his band, The City Slickers). His forte was doing crazy renditions of popular songs - a Weird Al Yankovich precursor. Anyway, his real name was Lindley Armstrong Jones, and he departed this earth in 1965, when Basia was but a babe. Too early for the video scene. He was nuts. Anyway, today's Boston Globe has a feature on (hold on to your hats) CHER in the Living/Arts section. I would have never given it a second thought except that her new look is a perfect mimic of our own BB (Beloved Basia), right down to the bangs. I suspect these shots (solarized, ya know, to remove any epidermal hint of the age thing - 50, by the way. One of the few beings left on this planet older than meself, by cracky) are making the circuit she will be appearing in, so when anyone else out there see's 'em, mabey I'll be backed up here (for once) on an opinion. Of course it may well be that someone will say, "Hey, didn't Cher originate that look?" but I recall back then you never actually saw her eyes. Phil ------------------------------ From: "M.E. I am essentially a jazz fan which was how I was attracted to Basia's music. It would be a shame if there were other great artists of the same genre which has not been exposed on commercial radio. Look forward to receiving many replies! Call me cultured. :) (Actually my father has tons of old records -- oooh, records, what are those? -- from which I got to know Spike very well.) He's a brilliant musician to be able to pull off the antics he did -- definitely needs to be heard to be believed. BTW, I agree with the folks who say that Jonze is an *awesome* video director -- "Sabotage" and "It's Oh So Quiet" are indeed works of art.
