Several people commented on the fans who attended B's last concert. I noticed that her Phoenix concert was attended by people unusually well dressed as for an opera, not a pop concert. No freaks, no cross- dressers, no Basia wannabes. This was in August of 1994, when the temperature in Phoenix must've hit 110+. My impression was there were more Basia fans than Spyro Gyra fans. My honey and I didn't like SG's performance. It was just a long jam session. As to Roach's missing version of "More than I Can Bear," I can imagine a movie made of this mystery, like "Diva," with evil characters stalking our hero, Roach, in a quest for the elusive tape. Madonna, hair dyed chestnut, will play Basia; Hugh Grant will play the frustrated Roach; Terri Hatcher will play Roach's lady love; Louie Anderson will play Dee Anthony; Patrick Stewart will play Danny White. Well, seeing as how I'm a member of the "Indigo-really-sucked-big-lemons-with-the-exception-of-that- one-song," club, I think my opinion would be a little biased on this topic. I mean, INDIGO is the album that turned me off to Matt Bianco - I'm scared to death (despite Dirk's reassurances) of buying ANOTHER TIME, ANOTHER PLACE or SAMBA IN YOU CASA or GRAN VIA (though I could probably never find it anywhere) because they may be as yuckie as INDIGO. Granted, this is only my opinion - I don't dare question the musical value of both the Estefans' work; Gloria's fan base dwarfs anything we could ever hope to achieve and, even though he might've fudged-up INDIGO, Emilio is still highly reguarded in the industry. As for other producers - this whole endeavour is probably going to be a mistake. Basia and Danny are unproduceable - they've done EVERYTHING (and I mean EVERYTHING) from the beginning BY THEMSELVES. Why break the habit of a lifetime just to get an album out a few months sooner? But, if its GOTTA be that way, my vote's still for Hugh Padgham. Toodles! It was just a long jam session. Ours, too, was in August '94...August 21st to be more exact. But the looneys were out in full force - I can't believe I'm the only one who had these people at the show. Maybe its because we made it a mission to search these people out...to mingle with the cool people ;). And we only had one cross-dresser (that we saw), but he was quite proud of himself. Perhaps we also had a more mixed crowd because of the venue - after all, it was Merriweather Post Pavillion, which is a rather large outdoor structure. Half the people we talked to had lawn seats but they were eventually bumped up to pavillion seating for free because a) the pavillion hadn't sold out yet and b) a bad summer storm had come through a few hours before the show and made the lawn seating a mud-bath. As for Spyro Gyra's performance: I liked them. No one else apparently did, including the guy who reviewed the show for the Washington Post, but I thought they were good. > As to Roach's missing version of "More than I Can Bear," I can imagine a > movie made of this mystery, like "Diva," with evil characters stalking > our hero, Roach, in a quest for the elusive tape. But I think there was a legitimate difference between most of the crowd... for example, when Spyro Gyra was onstage, the crowd was very laid back but still very attentive - and any time Jay Beckenstein would say what song they were about to perform, there was a definite reaction from the crowd. And near the end of their hour when the bassist did his EXCELLENT solo, that put a lot of people on their feet (he was an excellent bass player - much better than that wimp Basia had (L42 Disclaimer: he was no Mark King!)). But when Basia came out, it became a very different crowd - the Thurston Howell types were drowned out by the wilder people... hell, there were even a number of people who LEFT after Spyro Gyra finished. But that didn't necessarily mean that there were more Basia fans, it was just that the Basia fans were LOUDER and less lethargic. There was a good number of people there who were solely Spyro Gyra fans or just Modern Jazz fest-addict fans. What ticked me off so much was that they did, indeed, bump those people up from lawn seats to pavillion seats for free - I paid @$55 per ticket while they paid a lowly $15; granted, it was easy to overlook this fact when one saw where they were put as opposed to where we were sitting. Are you sure, Dirk? I just checked both and neither one had it. I might've passed on the Greatest Hits CD, but I would kill to get a copy of those videos! I always felt shorted by the fact that VH-1 only ever played part of the "WSAYO" video in the Basia special from a few years back. Toodles!
