They're, like, meaningless. Promos, import CD singles...yeah, sure, you get the occasional remix which is unavailable in the States, maybe even the odd "Angels Blush" here and there, but never anything of this caliber. > Why should Water of March be any different (except that it is supposedly a > full album)? That's it exactly!!! Because it IS a full fledged album!! Ask yourself, what if London Warsaw New York were never released here? Or the Sweetest Illusion? Or even Time and Tide - hell, then Basia would be nothing more than some nameless European novelty act...some pro-Western relic of the old, defunct, Communist controlled Eastern Europe. She'd be a joke, except maybe in Japan. I mean, think about it...think hard. What if one of the "Big 3" were never released here? Imagine having your Basia CD collection go straight from Time and Tide to the Sweetest Illusion... Next, I want you to ask yourself, what if you didn't have Internet access? What if, even though you're a huge Basia fan, you had no idea this list existed? Think about that one...think about all the people who come under that categorization who'll never know of "Water of March"'s existence because Sony Japan are a bunch of buttheads. We are an obscure minority within the fandom...hell, there are probably more Basia fans that are alcoholic albinos than there are people on this list (Politically Correct Disclaimer: if you are an albino, I apologize deeply for that last comparison. Also, if you're an alcoholic, you too are entitled to this apology). Ask yourself, would I know what "Angels Blush" was if I wasn't subscribed to this list? Would I know what that odd version of "Half a Minute" was that I heard at the local Wal-Mart if I wasn't subscribed to this list? Would I know what "Water of March" was if I wasn't subscribed to this list? The answer to all of these questions would probably be no. What appalls me the most has to be the way Sony Japan has apparently turned "Water of March" into their own little private plaything. Frankly, I can only come up with two reasons as to why this thing isn't getting released here or in the UK: 1) The lousy sales of BOB have made Sony gunshy, or 2) They want to make it a novelty item by only releasing it in South America (and in Japan, of course) because Jobim (who, by the way, I've never heard of) or whoever the hell it was just happened to come from South America. And I'll say this again...let's reverse the role here: what if Basia were to do a tribute album to, say, Stevie Wonder? What if Sony US decided that, because Wonder was an American, that the CD would only be released in the US and Canada. WHAT KIND OF SENTIMENTAL BULL@#&* IS THAT!?!?!? Frankly, I don't care if this guy invented the SAMBA WHISTLE - THIS SORT OF TREATMENT AND SENTIMENTAL BULLCRUD IS INEXCUSEABLE!!!! What I can't believe is that Basia/Danny/Dee Anthony have apparently sat back and stayed quiet while Sony Japan basically screws a majority of the fans worldwide. You know what, I don't want to talk about it anymore because I'm just @#&*ing furious over this crap. > Also, if the new album in the works doesn't hit precisely this fall, well so > what? It will come eventually (unless this is a cruel hoax). I have a few > years on you, I'm sure, so trust me on this: good things *are* usually worth > waiting for; and, you can't expect everything to be on time. Oh, believe me, I'm in no rush. I'd much rather see Basia and Danny take their time and release something excellent in 1998 than have it be rushed and then have it become a not-so-excellent 1996 release. I simply wished to state that I wouldn't lay any bets on that Fall '96 release date, telling from the jump-the-gun habits of an overly optomistic manager (he did it in '92...what's to stop him from doing it again in '96) who will remain nameless (DEE ANTHONY!). And does anyone know what ever happened to Alan Seifert (Basia's manager during Time and Tide and London Warsaw New York)? One might speculate that the drop in the level of publicity between albums might've been an unfortunate outcome of the changing of the guard from Seifert to Anthony. Of course, VH-1's defection to MTV-lite didn't help matters much. Anyway, again, I'm in no rush. I'd wait 10 years if I had to, especially for a Hugh Padgham-produced Basia album. Granted, Mr. Padgham probably isn't going to be the mystery boy but, one can speculate, right? Still, WE DON'T HAVE TO WAIT THAT LONG FOR A NEW STUDIO ALBUM BECAUSE THERE'S ALREADY ONE DONE AND READY TO SHIP - just not to us bastard children, that is. Jeff, I don't pretend to know much about Antonio Carlos Jobim, but he was probably regarded as a Brazilian national hero. He was a very successful composer-arranger-musician (piano) who wrote or co-wrote such tunes as "Girl From Ipenema" and "Desifinado". These were very popular during the Samba craze of the early sixties here in the US. I know there was some talk about the "Getz/Gilberto" LP on this list some time ago. Get out the vinyl if you have it and check it out again. This was landmark stuff. Obviously a heavy influence on Basia. Listen to Stan Getz's saxaphone work. Sound like some stuff on T&T? How about Astrud Gilberto's voice? Reminds me of Ms T on some of her work. Like I said, I am looking forward to Water of March, no matter how I get it. I played Getz/Gilberto to death. I won't be able to abuse the Water of March CD the way I did the vinyl, so it should last. BTW, your point about the list was well taken. Well, Jobim was one of the most influential (maybe THE most influential) songwriter of southamerican music in the last 40 years. He recorded the most influential samba jazz album of all time with Astrud Gilberto (yes, THE Astrud), Joau Gilberto and the late but unforgotten Stan Getz, featuring for the first time ever timeless gems like "Girl from Ipanema", "Desafinado" and"Corcovado". Roach, if I were you, I'd get this album (released on Verve) and have a listen to it, and you would immediately love it's beauty. It's very slim recorded, only percussion, sax, piano, guitar and the voice of the Gilbertos and all recorded live in, er, I think 1963. If Basia really does a good job on the songs of Jobim and leaves her electronic equipment at home, this album can be a real bummer, as even I (yes, me, who still doesn't like TPI and LWNY) will get the album. About the releasing policy: I don't know how long the present sony top - mangement will still reside, as they keep astonishing me: Putting zillions of bucks into that horrendous paedophilic son of a frankenstein "History" production and then, when it's not selling, zillions into promotion; losing George Micahel after only 2 albums, promoting that boss's wife Carey until you want to kick the tv everytime she appears on a Music Channel... And now the Basia Incident.... I tell you, they're all doomed :-) Dirk (who is now ordering that Basia album..) Agree, metric system is easier to use because it's using exponents of 10, just like decimal number is. That's a very helping standard, espescially when computing very large and complex number. Her height is....Let me see....from her pictures in Basia On Broadway booklet, i'll deduce that she's about the same height as i am, 175 cm. And On a second thought, i think i'll reduce her weight to 62 kg to balance her height. Yeah, i think those'll fit on her very nicely. And you know what? After an exhaustive investigation of her pictures, i think she's got my nose, although not very similar. Her nose is a 'greek' type one. To make it clear, here's her picture in text of her nose, seen from her side: | \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ { }_______} ---- | | note for basia's fans: don't be insulted by this text-based pictures. just relaxed, ok, it's not an exact replica of her nose, really. It's just an illustration to clear up my explaination. And here's my version of text-based picture of her face taken from the front page cover booklet of Basia on Broadway: ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ | ~~~~~ ~~~~~ \ | _____ _____ \ / / | | \ | | | | | | | | | | ( VV ) | \ / | /----------\ / | \~~~~~~~~~~/ | \ \ / / \ ------ / \----------/ ps: i left her hair in purpose. it's very hard to copy. pss: do you know her voice when she posed for that picture? i can guarantee that it sounded like: eeeeeeechk [e similar to word 'a' in pray]. One trivia question: If you look at Basia's picture from the inside booklet of Basia on Broadway, which she is dancing and pulling her skirt on page 2, 3, 14, and 15, the picture is using a 2-color process, which is black and yellow, black and red, black and green, and black and brown. The question is: what's the real color of her skirt? How about Astrud Gilberto's voice? BUT IS THAT A GOOD ENOUGH REASON NOT TO RELEASE IT HERE!?!? Frankly, I think I'd be a little less upset if Sony came forward and said, "yeah, we're not releasing it in the States because the fan base is close to total extinction and we don't want to waste our marketing dollars on another waste of time." At least that's easier to swallow than this "Jobim, the Samba God of Brazil" junk. BTW, yes, I HAD the "Getz/Gilberto" CD...and even though this may be blasphemy - I hated it and I gave it away to somebody. Yes, I heard the influences and the overtones and, God help me, I tried liking it, but listening to it kept on making me feel like I was trapped in my grandmother's house in Florida with my only companion being a broken radio stuck on the classic samba station. It was definitely too dated for my pallet. And yes, Time and Tide did share some characteristics with the Getz/Gilberto LP, but I think that can be attributed to Ronnie Ross' (who was noticeably absent on the Sweetest Illusion) saxophone work more than anything else. And I also consider him to be one of the major links between the similarity of T&T and the first two Matt Bianco albums. I mean, yeah, T&T had that samba flair to it, but Ross sort of completed that image of he and Basia being the "Getz and Gilberto" of the 80's...without his playing I don't think there would've been as much emphasis on comparing it to the "Getz/Gilberto" LP. Now you're probably thinking: "Well, Roach, if you hated the Getz/Gilberto LP so much then why are you going bezerk over the 'Water of March' CD?" That's a good question. I ask you: how many of you have ever heard the original version of "Until You Come Back to Me," the one done by Aretha Franklin? I have - I hate it... its a boring song. Aretha's definitely done some better stuff in her time, and Stevie Wonder's definitely written some better stuff in his time... but what about Basia's version? I love it... its a great song. Know why? Well, Basia sings it... its more upbeat and catchy and the arrangement is much more complex. Now do you see why I'm going bezerk over "Water of March?" This album could give me a whole new perspective on a collection of music that I otherwise hated... it could do the same for alot of people, but because of Sony Japan the Basia fans at large here in the US probably won't ever hear of its existence. That's outrageous... inexcusable... atrocious... disgusting! > BTW, your point about the list was well taken. I would still be another > naive local with an interest in Basia, but little more. But life would still > go on. Take your point a step further. How many other talents are out there > that we don't know about, but would love if we had access? We don't know, I > guess, but is your life poorer for it? Let me try to explain it like this: Besides being an avid Basia fan, I'm also a die-hard fan of Level 42...I know that there are a few of you out there lurking on this list who are also Level 42 fans because I occasionally see your names pop up on the daily L42 net digest. Before I climbed aboard the information superhighway, I lived it relative obscurity when it came to getting information about my favorite artists/bands. For years, I waited patiently to walk into my local CD shop one day and by accident find a new Level 42 LP sitting in the bins... that day never came. But I was still patient, after all, Level 42 was a UK based band. Their US following was thin and sparse compared to the UK fanbase and because of this, the UK fans have been milkfed throughout the entirity of the band's history (much like the Japanese are with Basia). Soon after getting on the Internet, I found Vince's L42 homepage... not only had the band had an album out during the aforementioned period of time, but it had been out for almost a year and the band had broken up soon after its release. So I wondered, hmm, if the album has been out for a year, why hadn't I ever seen it in the local CD shops? As it turns out, the album was never released in the US - it was only released in the UK and Japan. I was livid. Super livid. I was a die-hard fan who had no choice but to live in total ignorance because a UK record company decided that the US fan base wasn't large enough to warrant releasing the album in the US. Ironically, though, two days after discovering the album's existence it mysteriously turned up in the local Tower Records import bins...I had to pay $21 for it. But the fun doesn't end there...since then, another UK record company has rereleased the album with 6 new tracks and even though the UK fans on the list SWARE that there's going to be a US version released (it was supposed to be out in November, then it was bumped back to December, then January, and since then I haven't heard anything more about it), I still do not have the newer version - the version which the UK fans spend most of their time on the digest raving about. It upsets me... it makes me furious. Especially when I read what the UK fans have to say about it: "oh its wonderful and excellent and superb and the 6 bonus tracks are so super boffo...." It drives me nuts. I'm as much of a fan of the music as they are, so why aren't I entitled to being able to walk down to my local CD shop or ANY CD shop for that matter and just walk in and buy this super boffo CD? Why? Because the @#&*ing record companies know that they can have their way with us... because they know that they don't have to release a CD somewhere because they know that the fans will probably break their backs and spend a fortune for imports if it means that much to them. "Hell, let the fans lose money on this release," is probably RCA's US marketing strategy for the last Level 42 album. Well, you know what? I'm tired of imports. I'm tired of having to buy foriegn versions of all the best albums because the majority of the music-buying public here in the US are nothing more than ignorant children who will eat whatever the record company puts in front of them. And you know what else? I'm not doing it anymore. I would cancel my order with CD Banzai but I'm afraid that, because I sent in a money order, I'd have to commit hare kare just to get my money back. So I'm gonna let it come - but I plan on selling it to a local used CD dealer so I'll know that sometime later, some internet-less Basia fan will walk in and have their day brightened by accidently finding this CD in the bins - and I'll have the satisfaction of knowing that this CD did indeed get released in the US, even if it was only one copy. I'm tired of being the record companies' whipping boy - I'm officially boycotting this album. If Sony doesn't give a damn about us then I'm not gonna give them the pleasure of breaking my back and spending my hard earned cash on ripoff imports. I know it seems a bit extreme, but this is a topic that I feel strongly about. Until this album finds its way into the domestic bins as a US release, I don't want to hear it. Just my $.02 worth. JSL.
