My top four was pretty easy to pick, but after that things got hairy. From ten to one, with a few gratuitous comments for each: 10. Not an Angel Whatever combination of instruments that is that opens the song, it sounds perfect right after "Copernicus" 9. How Dare You Great rhythm underscores a Basia song with "attitude" 8. More Fire Than Flame I've been meaning to weigh in on the "I don't like TSI, either" debate for some time now, but even on the first listen to the album, this song drew my attention. 7. Miles Away Perfect capper to the album -- its easy-going tempo, the finger snaps, the backing vocals, the way the piano comes in at the right moments -- perfect. 6. Reward My favorite Basia love song, lyric-wise. Love the transition from the opening piano to the percussion. 5. Astrud Cool combination of a "mysterious" story and a seductive melody. 4. Yearning As a follow-up to my comment for (8), I had to rediscover this song. I played the CD in my car (a great listening environment, BTW) as I was running errands a couple weeks ago, and fell in love with this song. Everyone who's been pointing it out has been absolutely right. I couldn't get it out of my mind all day. 3. Masquerade The song most unlike anything else she's done, IMO, and it works. The guy's voice complements Basia's very well. 2. Copernicus Heh-heh. Her classic uptempo number. And all the name dropping is cool, too. This the one song of hers that really makes me want to learn Polish. And my number one Basia song... 1. Time and Tide Like someone else said, it's what made me a fan in the first place. Even though Basia doesn't occupy the same place relative to my other musical interests that she did ten years ago, this is still one of my all-time favorite songs. No one does soaring vocals better. Every time I hear this song, I get this image of Basia in a long black dress, singing in some intimate, smoke-filled New Orleans jazz club. She's standing behind one of those large old-time microphones, backed by a full band and a trio of backup singers. And of course, she's singing her heart out. I've never seen the video, and I guess, I really shouldn't. Sorry for going on so long. Can't wait to hear the results. Time and Tide 2. Yearning 3. Astrud 4. Copernicus 5. Masquerade 6. Yearning (the song so nice, I list it twice!) 7. Cruising for Bruising 8. Baby You're Mine 9. Half a Minute 10. Third Time Lucky BTW: In case having a song listed twice throws the ranking system off, I *might* be persuaded to replace #6 with "Give Me That." Maybe. - ---Wm.D. ------------------------------ End of basia-digest V1 #55 **************************
