Re: Our Favorite Tunes Combee's Basia Top 10 I LOVE BASIA !!! Top Ten Countdown... My Top Ten ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "J.S. Lohr" Date: Wed, 28 Feb 1996 02:57:23 -0500 (EST) Subject: Our Favorite Tunes In light of all the talk about liking/not liking remixes and the short conversation we had back and forth over liking/not liking TSI, I'm curious as to what a consensus of Top 10 Basia songs would look like from such a diverse group of musical tastes. I suggest that we do a rating system - ie everyone posts their top 10 favorites, #1 being their favorite and #10 being their 10th favorite...and so on (yes, Vince and Prashant, I'm stealing this from the Level 42 list...sue me, 'kay? :)). Then after a few weeks, I'll take the scores and post them to the list. I'll start the ball rolling: Roach's Top 10: 1. Yearning (shut up...that whale noise makes me cry!) 2. New Day For You 3. Time and Tide 4. Perfect Mother 5. Not an Angel 6. Forgive and Forget 7. Brave New Hope 8. Copernicus 9. Simple Pleasures 10. Ordinary People BTW, I'll be scoring the results using the following point system: a #1 vote gets 10 points, a #2 vote gets 9 points, and so on. If you don't want to post your Top 10 list on the mailing list then its ok to email me direct, but its not like this is a high volume list (you would think it was by all those people's complaints a few weeks back). Also, ANY and ALL _BASIA_ songs are eligible but any votes for a specific remix will be counted in with the votes for the original song itself and won't be counted separately. MATT BIANCO SONGS (except for "Half a Minute" for obvious reasons) DO NOT COUNT!!! Nor do any songs that Basia might sing on but that don't appear on any of her albums or singles (ie "Departures" or "Romance" (that weird David Cassidy song that BJ gave me a copy of)). Oh, and "She Deserves It" and "Rachel's Wedding" count as separate songs. And if you post "Water of March" on your list I'll have no choice but to come to your house, beat you up, and steal your CD's. :D Also, songs like "Angels Blush" and "Dzien Sie Budzi" DO count so don't be afraid to put those on your list. Gosh, I hope I get some votes. Toodles! This is... ============================================================================= Like ohmigod! Roach has a homepage! You're our only way out of this life of ignorance as fans (seeing as how Sony themselves can't even be relied upon for vital info). <<< I repeat, "Who, me?" :) Heck, I'm just a grunt around here, nobody tells me nothin'... I didn't even know Peter White was doing some sort of outdoor festival here (well, in Pasadena CA) in July! I had to hear about it from the Al Stewart Mailing list! (go figure!) And concerning the PW newsletter, we may be publishing *only* in electronic form in the future. I'm working on Peter's website (html code, what an education!) and hope to have it "up" and running sometime soon. JSL also sed (well, kinda): >>> ...ooooh blame it on the rain laaaalaala di da... :D <<< Lordy! ;-) All this talk about remixes & such has me thinking of Peter's story of how "From Now On" (original from "Time & Tide") came about -- See, Peter lives in the US. And of course, Basia and Danny live in the UK (near London). So when they wanted Peter to work on Basia's album, they sent Peter some tapes and charts and said "just dub in your guitar playing and send it back to us". As I recall the story, when Peter got "From Now On", it was music, no vocals, and the full band was playing on the piece. Peter dubbed in what he thought was a quiet, minor, *background* element of the whole tune, and sent it back to D&B. So later when the album is about to come out, Danny tells Peter, "Hope you don't mind, but we cut all the other music out of "From Now On", so it's just your guitar, and Basia singing." And of course, we all know the outcome of that tune, it's really nice that way (IMHYOBO) (in my humble yet obviously biased opinion!) (HA!). I heard a really nasty version of "Drunk On Love" over some muzak that was in my grocery store one day... Musta looked like a complete idiot standing there in the middle of the store in the middle of an aisle with my head tilted back on the axis of my ears and staring incredulously at the miniscule speaker in the cathedral ceiling that was *just barely* piping this ...uh... *stuff* (ack!) out to invade my subconsciousness. HUH??? Since I'm not a habituae of used record stores (I find that kind of hobby makes it really hard for me to make my rent payments and buy the little necessities of life like, ...mmmmm... Ben & Jerry's Coffee Heath Toffee Crunch ice cream...) (nirvana!) (HA!), I would imagine this is one of the "mix" things that have been floating around... I've seen these things, have a few myself, but I usually can't pay for imports unless they're something ***REALLY*** important (such as feeding my occasional Soft Cell/Marc Almond perversity). (Oh oh, does that mean I'm ejected from my seat in the "senate"???) (HA!) Anyhoo, I digress (no kidding!)... That "Drunk On Love" remix I heard was simply horrendous. And they cut out Peter's solo, too!!! (how dare they???) I'd truly love to get a copy of that "Angels Blush", tho... Nice stuff. :) TTFN! --Di. (yes, I'm back, run for cover!) I'll put the results up on BasiaWeb once it stabilizes. Anyway, here's my Basia Top 10: #1 Time and Tide (it got me hooked and still thrills me) #2 An Olive Tree (the tree hugger song) #3 Astrud (great tribute to a great artist) #4 How Dare You (pass up this sassy song) #5 Forgive and Forget (another attitude-laden soarer) #6 Masquerade (reminds me of Matt Bianco!) #7 Not an Angel (quite a change in direction lyrically) #8 Freeze Thaw (angry and wonderful) #9 Drunk on Love (anti-"Freeze Thaw") #10 More Fire Than Flame (an anthem for continued love) and honorable mention to "Baby You're Mine" and "Third Time Lucky". Surprises? Well, few songs from LWNY showed up on the list. I suppose they just didn't hit me so right. I loved the album, but nothing seems as strong as the best of T&T or TSI. Also, both extra tracks from BNH-2 were included. I just really like them. Also, no showing for the slower songs -- "Yearning", "From Now On", "Brave New Hope", "Reward". They just don't get to me so much. BTW, if MB songs were allowed, "Whose Side Are You On?", "No No Never", and "Sneaking Out the Back Door" would be in contention. - -- Benjamin L.
