Here's what you've all been waiting for. I have upgraded the mailing list software (Majordomo) to the latest and greatest version (1.92). The most important consequence is that all lists on smoe.org are now also available in digest mode. What is "Digest Mode"? - ---------------------- Some lists are experiencing a lot of volume (many messages per day). Some people would rather not receive all these postings one at a time since it can be difficult to get any work done if you are always being interrupted by incoming mail. In digest mode, Majordomo collects all the messages sent to the list during a given day and then sends you a single composite message at the end of the day which contains all the individual messages glued together. Currently digests are scheduled to go out at 1 AM (Eastern). If there is great interest in having the digests go out at another time, or perhaps twice a day, I'll consider changing it. Are there any Drawbacks to Digest Mode? - -------------------------------------- If a message announcing some event is posted to the list the same day as the event, you will not see the posting until after the event has occurred. Of course, if you are expecting an important announcement, you can always subscribe to the regular form of the list for that day. How Do I Sign Up for Digest Mode? - --------------------------------- For each list on smoe.org, there is a companion digest list called `listname-digest'. For example, the digest form of the siblings list is called siblings-digest. The digest form of the jewel list is called jewel-digest, etc. You decide whether or not you want to receive postings in digest mode on a per list basis. For example, if you are currently on the jewel list and want to switch to digest mode for that list, unsubscribe yourself from the jewel list and subscribe to the jewel-digest list. You would do this by sending the following three-line message to majordomo@smoe.org: unsubscribe jewel subscribe jewel-digest end That's all there is to it. In all other respects, digest lists work the same way as normal lists. For example, you can unsubscribe from a digest list and re-subscribe to the normal form of the list by reversing the list names in the example above; i.e., unsubscribe jewel-digest subscribe jewel end Replying to Digest Messages - --------------------------- Since messages digest contain several messages, usually from several different people, you will have to pay attention to the From: or Reply-To: fields on the headers of the individual messages if you want to reply to the author of that message. Simply replying to the incoming digest message will direct your message back to the list address where everyone on the list will see it. Please be sure NOT to quote or forward the entire digest when replying back to the regular address. Do I Post to listname@smoe.org or listname-digest@smoe.org? - ----------------------------------------------------------------- Even if you are signed up for the digest form a list, you still send your postings to the regular form of the list address. For example, if you are signed up for jewel-digest, you would still send your own messages to jewel@smoe.org. Can I be Subscribed to Both listname and listname-digest? - --------------------------------------------------------- Yep. Of course, in general this would defeat the purpose of digest mode. However, you might want to be on the digest form of a list for most of the time and periodically subscribe to the regular form of the list if you were expecting an important announcement that day. When Did it All Start? - ---------------------- Digest capability was turned on some time around midday today (Eastern Time) so the first digests (sent out tonight) will contain messages from that point forward. Have fun, and stay tuned for another announcement about the availability of the mailing list archives. Why does Sony make themselves look so moronic by putting all that stuff in the linear notes only to a) not make it available through that medium and b) sell it off only a few months later in SAN FRANCISCO (why there?). Or did they know in advance that only 55 people were going to buy BOB? > And, yes, they did have Basia stuff. T-shirts, specifically. So for > those of you that either decided not to buy anything at the time Can you blame anyone when the original prices were so outlandishly high? I seem to remember that one with the Halina Tymuyz painting on it was priced somewhere in the neighborhood of $40. And all it had on it besides that was "Basia" and the stupid Streisand symbol rip-off on the front and back. Most of the stuff was pretty outrageously priced, but you know me, I picked it up anyway. Paid $22 for that lousy friggin hat which didn't even have Basia's name NOR the tour name on it! All it had was that Streisand symbol rip off and "World Tour" embroidered on the front and back, respectively. Granted, the tour program was really nice and it was nice to be able to get that poster of the TSI cover when Basia posters are so hard to find (I've only ever found one outside of a concert setting). I did buy one shirt, though...I think its the same as the one being offered: the one where Basia looks like Satan on the front.... just kidding. But it would've been nice if they'd put a little more gray die in her irises, not that I would ever wear this shirt out in public due to my own personal faux pas, but it's definitely a nice thing to have. Sony sucks! But on the other hand, I think we're lucky we even HAD souvenirs offered at the original shows...Basia doesn't seem like the type of artist to attract a souvenir-hungry crowd to her shows. No one's jumped on the vinyl offering yet...figured "Departures" would've gone pretty fast again, but...its still available. ============================================================================ JSLohr: Roach Delusionary and King Banana of Agitprop Magazine (& Basia Fan) "The best work is that which is done at the last minute." - S.P.
