Just dreadful. This matches Olympia which despite the big push from BF (remember the horror of his 'Loose Women' appearance?) entered at 19 and left after two weeks. Only 'The Jazz Age' has entered at a lower position.B This will likely be The Commander's third consecutive album to fail to reach Silver BPI Certification for the sale of 60,000 units in the UK. Dylanesque was the last to achieve that feat, nearly eight years ago.B Mamouna has yet to reach Silver certification after 20 years, meaning all three parts of the 'Horoscope' trilogy have failed to trouble the scorers.B His last Gold record, for clearing 100K sales was the compilation 'Slave To Love' in 2000 (the slow-burning 'As Time Goes By' also went Gold the year before) His last Platinum solo album (for selling 300K) was 'Boys and Girls' nearly 30 years ago although both the Roxy/Ferry compilations 'Street Life: 20 Great Hits' and 'The Ultimate Collection', and later RM best of compilation 'More Than This' also went Platinum, 'Street Life' doing so on its day of release. The Ultimate Collection eventually went triple Platinum with sales approaching 1 million copies, or one for every 60 people in the UK. How times change. What's number one? One Direction. Proof that chasing high chart placings - with maybe a couple of exceptions - is a young mans game. Avonmore was never going to break the top ten, it's pretty lucky to get into the top 20 really. That's not a judgement on quality as it's probably the best Ferry lp since Boys and Girls, but there isn't a really obvious single on it. I still think that Olympia was stymied by You Can Dance being played ad infinitum when there was better, more obvious commercial material on the lp. Avonmore has fewer options. It's a shame as the reviews for Avonmore, as ever, have been very kind. I wonder if all the copies sold with tickets for the show are part of the sales tally? Given Ferry tours always seem to be very well attended, I'm surprised they didn't boost the placing further. Christ knows where it'd have charted if they hadn't pulled that stunt. I wonder if the Ferry camp are wondering whether a new Roxy album would have enjoyed a much higher placing at this point... Pink Floyd were Number One last week...with a Gold album, while young turks like Springsteen, Black Sabbath, Rod Stewart ('Time' went Platinum) and oh, that David Bowie guy have all topped the album chart with albums of new material recently. There's plenty of Dad-rock all over the album charts. And plenty of graybeards like me to buy it. Shame so few seem to want The Commander's output lately. I fear he's just too safe. I know chart positions are an imperfect measure, but they are at least some indicator of popularity. But there's no shame in selling a lot of albums, by the way. In fact, it's kind of the point.B I'm not down on Avonmore at all; it's perfectly pleasant - much better than Olympia in my view. If I had a criticism it is that while boasts a stellar cast, they are all just part of the aural soup. I couldn't identify wonderful players like Marr, Knopfler or Gilmour from any of the other 38 guitarists.B Chris From: Jonathan Wilkins To: Chris Turner Cc: Richard Evans ; avalon Sent: Sunday, 23 November 2014, 23:14 Subject: Re: [AVALON] Avonmore chart placing...
