I've been very depressed this past year, can't seem to escape. I love all you guys more than I can say - yes, even Thom whom I apologized to many years ago. I have enjoyed the thoughtful and substantial posts made in recent year by Statto and forever young Simon G. etc. I've missed Jocelyn's cheeky wit, Martino's ferry-romantic styling's, really too many to enumerate... Remember Colleen's song-of-the-week and Han's cover discoveries? I've suspected that Avalon's drought in discourse and interaction has been supplanted by much easier superficial 'social media' where tiny 'sound bites' (for lack of better words) are exploited by even tinier thought generated mind-to-thumb striking from a harried and 'frantically pressed for time' people who are striving to 'be' significant (think, Warhol's fifteen minutes of fame syndrome)... Hence forth, a slow death of social civility and old world charm and sensibility; the rapid rise of massive mind-numbing, dummying-down of peoples - a global society of increasingly shallow beings, corralled and manipulated by power mongers... I digress into a dark, black, hole. When the world you know is fading out of time...... Best wishes. So grateful for this post Chris, think it says it all really. Reckon I found the list at about ATGB or thereabouts. Had a few occasions at gigs when my question-'Are you on the Avalon list?' was met with -'No, what's that?' Not one to be put off though, my Sister and me eventually had a ball meeting a few list members! Highlights were reading the reviews. So many times we couldn't make a show, but then someone would write their account of it and you felt like you were there. Seriously, if I saw that Reecey or Jocelyn had left a review, I would ensure to make myself a cup of tea or coffee with which to enjoy it all the more! Best wishes to all those going to the USA shows. Wish I could be there- and I hope you enjoy an adventurous time John(Dillon)! All the best Pauline ________________________________ From: Chris Turner To: "avalon@smoe.org" Sent: Monday, 15 September 2014, 3:18 Subject: [AVALON] Mailing Lists...a few memories I think the appeal of a mailing list is still a seductive one but unfortunately the need for more secure forms of email is making this method of delivery more difficult. But this list has never been about the mechanics. Or even Roxy Music particularly. It's been about the people here. Our relative lack of numbers gave us some exclusivity. Or were we just shepherded here to keep our obsession away from decent society? Hmmm... How about the hours spent talking about Floris or Phytofix or white socks or cellists or b-sides or bassists or backing singers or bootlegs? The lyrical analysis? The trouser analysis? The conspiracy theories? The flame wars? Racing home from a gig to write your review? Who remembers Jason Greshes or Rhode Island Red or Webgal or Peanut or eman or Monquiboy or Betsy Fowler or Decophile or Will Frechette or Jim Spellman or Arnie or Grant Goggans or M or David Firmin or Han or Daniel Atterbom or a phalanx of other regular contributors (apologies for any omissions)? Even dear old Martineaux has lapsed lately. How about Flangebracket or Mr Avalon or Lawn-gate or Rhett Davies' niece? DavdMock's ENORMOUS sig file? The wonderfully Machiavellian Jimmy Vapor (who described Avalon as 'this glam-rock toilet bowl')? KBP vs Tom Wallace? Kwil loves Michiel? Roger Eno's PR Machine? The comedy stylings of JFRoxy? Reecey's microscopically-detailed European travelogues? Statto? (wait, that was me...) There are a few names there for the greybeards. Remember the twin wonders that were 'A Mad Affair' I and II? How about 'A Perfumed Sigh' or 'A Rhapsody Divine'? The palpable excitement of attending the BBC recordings? What about the CD Trees? Or Kicki's list website? How many people got the seats they wanted for the reunion or the inside griff on new material via this place? Or got to meet like-minded strangers at gigs who became friends just because of this silly obsession? Or indeed people you will never meet who you know better than many friends? And then there was the drinking and the, um, 'horizontal liaisons'. Don't think there wasn't... Anyhoo, we still have 154 members on the main list and 112 on the digest now. Allowing for dual registered members, ghost entries and lurkers, probably 100 odd members now, quite a way from its heyday around the turn of the century, but there is an astonishing hardcore who have been here almost from the start. I know it's been 15 years of my life. And it's been bloody brilliant, Avalon has served us well, and I think it has a few years left in it yet. Let us hope BF has too... The band are also offering a limited supply of exclusive memorabilia via PledgeMusic with surplus proceeds going to Campaign Against Arms Trade. Info will be available on the Pop Group's Facebook and Twitter. Frontman Mark Stewart and guitarist Gareth Sager discussed We Are Time in a press release. Stewart: bThe Pop Group was mutating so fast right from the start that it was crucial to document those first experiments with this compilation. We Are Time is really btheb teenage Pop Group album.
