Was it worth it you may ask? Yes it was, is my response. Now, due to the fact that the episode of TOTP in question featured a certain J. Savile presenting and a certain G. Glitter at number one, the BFI decided not to show the whole thing. And for a moment, I didn't think they were going to show any of it! But with some rather harsh editing, we were treated to Roxy's performance in full. And it was a rather psychedelic experience! TOTP's much-used solarise effect was very much in evidence, probably a bit too much, usually on the close ups of Ferry's face - and on the big screen it was rather spooky (that effect used to scare me as a child anyway). During the 'Street Life' middle section Bry's eyes melted away to reveal Eddie Jobson sawing away at his electric violin in the hollows of Ferry's face. The vision mixing (cutting between two cameras) on the finger clicking bit straight after was rapid and hopelessly out of time with the beat, but pretty cool nonetheless. There was one rather shaky tracking shot taking in the whole band crammed on the tiny stage, but overall, the cameras were mostly trained on Ferry. For the three minutes it was on I was sat with a big grin on my face. And it was over all too quickly! Two points to note - it was a straight mime to the regular studio version, although the mono sound appeared to push Ferry's vocals up in the mix a little more. And the source was definitely not a master tape, possibly an early domestic video recording or some sort of very poor telecine type transfer. It was certainly not broadcast quality (not like the excellently preserved Jean Genie which surfaced at the same event last year) and for that reason I would think it highly unlikely that we'll see it cropping up on a future TOTP2 or suchlike. Nor does it appear that anyone made a sneaky video recording on a mobile device during the screening and put it on YouTube. So Sunday was probably the only chance to see this little gem. The quality was similar to this TOTP clip of The Who, also from 1973 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Qv6QTrWXN4. Maybe a little worse (the big screen wouldn't have helped matters), and I guess visually it was fairly similar to the live Musikladen performance of Street Life on German TV, but Phil was stood up and Bry's hair was flatter - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HaCzvxjaQpQ. Also shown was a 1972 episode of 'Lift Off With Ayshea' (sadly not the one with David Bowie performing 'Starman') and a rather groovy 1960s show called 'A Whole Scene Going' which was, er, groovy! It was also very nice to catch up with Jocelyn and Jonathan and have a good natter. I'm still suffering from coachlag though. So long, pop pickers!
