Quaint, yes - martini anyone? (Maybe something to listen o a few more times than Dylanesque (for those who do not recall, said album emains unopened in my household)). ) The collection is strictly instrumental. OK, it might appeal to a subset f current BF fans as well as to some non-electric jazz/period-style ffectionatos - don't look for a run up the charts. What I do not know, and really need to know before I pass judgment on this ollection is: ) Who, other than Ferry and Good, was involved in the transitional reative remodeling from original to remake? ) How much of the transition was affected and effected by Good. Or hrased differently, did Ferry rewrite the jazz compositions on his own? ) Is BF the producer? ) What instruments does BF play on the recording and in what percentage hen compared to Colin Good's playing of the same instruments on the same ecording? The overall problem is that of ascertaining How Much this project Is truly, otally Bryan Ferry's work. In the past I have never questioned the uthenticity of his output. I fear Mr. Ferry's OCD propensity to run the amster's wheel in remaking, remodeling, revamping, reinterpreting, ewriting, reducing, re-rendering, recomposing his oldies but goodies has inally been reduced to that of an idea; that BF only thought it would be nice' to redo and repackage former works referring the machinations to olin Good; that Bryan Ferry is the brand. Please, Help Me! I need to know in order to understand. I'm curieus what you all think of it. I like some them, but the uptempo songs ar a bit too dixie for me. The melancholic ones i like. Hard to recocgnise some of the originals. For example, this is tomorrow and love is the drug. If you don't like 20s jazz, you won't like this project. My wife hates Ferry but loves jazz. Now I'll have a record we can agree on. My brother in law is 18 years younger than I am, likes a it of music including Ferry. He loves the new stuff, thinks it is very much of a piece with Olympia and is now giving a listen to some of the songs as originally performed. I'll take this over just about any other Ferry "off to the side" project, especially Taxi and Dylanesque. ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 09 Nov 2012 14:12:15 -0500 From: "K B Porter" Subject: Re: [AVALON] Ferry's Jazz Age (Credits) Thanks John, That Ferry is Director & Co Producer comes as no surprise since the recordings are of "The Bryan Ferry Orchestra". I must say, I am disappointed that Mr. Ferry has abdicated Piano & Arrangements to Colin Good for this project. Essentially then, the album is sanctioned by BF, authorizing the use of his original 'rock and pop' melodies as template for someone else to recompose in 20's jazz style, to be recorded by a hand-picked orchestra under his direction. I would have been excited had BF created the re-compositions, guess he had other things on his mind? The remaining questions are; whose idea was this project (BF or CG or other); and is this the first noticeable push toward the 'branding', and perhaps the 'franchising', of Bryan Ferry? - John, could you garner anymore from your crystal ball, please? Sunny skies. Is it just my bad mood? This Island Earth seems NICE enough, just the thing for discreet restaurant background music. I remember a review that said BF aspired to be the "king of elevator smooch music". A? great line but unfortunately all too true. I was youtubing thru various versions of Pirate Jenny the other night. I love the Brecht + Weill thang. BUT... The Bryan Ferry Orchestra...? WTF! This is all busywork. This just smacks of quick -buck navel-gazing.(imho) Why not let Colin Good have at some of those "Canvasses turned to the wall" in the vault, instead? (Love War, as a foxtrot?) At lease Jazzesque seems better than most of those rancid radar pinging remixes and "collaborations" IE: Groove Armada. Look at the recent output: a collection of "Standards" , a reworking of the Alphaville bootleg(10 years and 23 more guitar parts on top of what was once pretty exciting), a collection of Dylan songs, and how many of you play the whole of Olympia on a weekly basis? Can the creative tap can be primed a few times more? What DOES the new contract mean? It's a Ferry contract, no mention of Roxy. (I'm assuming anything in the can designated Roxy will magically become Ferry, especially since Manzanara, Mckay and TGPT have become just three more hired hands in the cast of thousands.) The back-catalog seems to be a big part of the attraction for the money men. Brace yourself for another batch of compilations, "In Every Dreamhome: Ferry To Dust By" In the past I've been a staunch defender of the, let BF be BF, position, but someone needs to shake him. He seems, abetted by yes-men, not so far from the bloated end period Elvis, lounging about in Graceland's Jungle Room, only steps from? watching teenage girls wrestle in their white-cotton-underwear, and shooting out TV screens. "Would y'all please fry another peanut butter and banana sandwich?" In every dreamhome a heartburn.
