My wife has recovered from being an attorney long enough to get her certificate in early childhood development. She now teaches a class of 2-1/2 year olds, and one of the techniques she has learned is to use music to help with transitions, e.g., arrival, morning circle, play, cleanup time, snack, etc. Her children nap right after lunch and so when I had the chance to suggest some lullaby music, I decided that Eno's first two ambient music albums would be just right for sleep inducement. And that was fine, except that the kids tended not to notice when the ambient music was turned on. After all, it's atonal, amelodic, arrhythmic, etc. So after consultation with the wife, I decided they needed a song to transition the kids to naptime. And being totally unbiased, I decided that "India" would be just right. And I'll be damned -- I was correct. You ought to see this classroom; it's great. Every time a transition song comes over the speakers, the kids do just what they are supposed to do. And when "India" cranks up, everybody grabs their nap mats and hunkers down for sleep. Fifteen minutes into Ambient 1, they are all sawing logs. I doubt these kids will ever know what hit them. ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ End of avalon-digest V15 #434 ***************************** ======================================================================== For further info, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: info avalon-digest
