I am steadily growing wider myself, so here it is. Apologies to those who've already read it; move along, move along, nothing new here (except a correction to the spelling of La Price's name). Those who want to see the accompanying pic, please see my FB page. 11th Sept 2012. Anderson & Sheppard, Savile Row tailors to Prince Charles and Bryan Ferry among many other luminaries were launch a second outlet around the corner from their main premises; The Rake magazine, a very high class Gentleman's fashion publication - 'the modern voice of classic elegance' - features Bryan Ferry as cover star and interviewee of the current issue: number 23 vol 5. A joint launch cocktail party was held in the A&S new premises with the Rake magazine as co-host; Bryan Ferry was guest of honour. I was invited, as I have been supplying cartoons semi-regularly for The Rake and my cousin-in-law is the Art Director of the Singapore-based publication, who has also seen me play sax in tribute band Roxy Magic. A perfect circle, or rampant nepotism at work, however you wish to think of it :) My wife Jo and I spent an hour or so playing wall-flowers, sticking to the sides of the very tastefully restrained new decor, whilst gawping at all the lovely suits on show, as modelled - I suppose - by regular clients and the glitterati of the tailoring industry, plus a couple of thesps (faces familiar, names unknown). Then Mr Ferry breezed in and was introduced to a few people. I thought, well, it's now or never, so, having already caught BF's eye as he walked in (in a 'do I know you?' kind of way) I sidled over to Marc, my Rake contact, to try and wheedle an introduction, but before I could even begin the process Ferry came over to me for a chat. So of course I fixed him with my most steely look (yeah, right) and told him why I was there and also that I was in tribute band Roxy Magic (irresistible). A great moment of the night was when Jo joined me after a few seconds, thinking that I was talking to Marc (which had been my stated intention) only to find herself being introduced to Ferry by me. Marvellous. Ferry was his usual Prince Charles-like gracious self and seemed reasonably interested by the conversation; he broke off to say hi to a couple of glamorous well-wishers, only to return to the important subject of which song was most popular with our audiences. I replied that one of them was 'If There Is Something' - incidentally nominated by the magazine as number one of their 'Songs of Elegance and Experience' and currently playing (the original version - - not ours!) on their website. He replied, 'of course, that's a good one for you with the long sax solo' - gesturing to my gold sax pin on (on the lapel of my B#50 M&S linen suit - I know how to cut a dash). He wished the band well, then was whisked away to other liggers and we were left to recover with some more champagne, peach Bellinis, Tequila Sunrises and exotic canapC)s (smoked eel, quails egg, potted shrimp etc.). I briefly spoke with Michael Bracewell - Roxy biographer; then more champagne, darlings, and we chatted to a lovely lady seamstress from Sicily who had been working at A&S for 40 years. Ferry was off at around 8:30 and, as he was going, we managed to get a snap taken with him (see my Facebook page) and then I persuaded Jo (who is so shy at these kind of 'dos' that it spurs me on to be bold - well, that and the cocktails do) that we should chat to Antony Price - Roxy's long-time costumier and dresser to the stars and 'women with rich husbands'. He was a scream, as I knew he would be, and we had the amusement of Jo pointing out to him that he had a sewing-pin sticking - point end out - at right angles from his breast pocket. We left before we were thrown out and took our goodie bags with the excellent magazine (really nice photos & layout of course) and hankie(!) and were home before 11pm. And there, Ladies and Gentlemen of the jury, I rest my case. Lee S Displacement activity a problem?
