Nor is it one with which I have over familiarised myself throughout the years. New York has always been a rip your stays off and shake your hair girl kinda town in my book. So I was mildly amused that The Beaconbs security decided that this night they would fight tooth and nail for the mantle of Jobsworths of the Universe b unbelievably beating Glasgowbs SECC gang into second place. The night started with much promise as a gaggle of us assembled for a bite and a few snifters to get the party started (sorry that our paths failed to cross this time Jen). Pincer movements were plotted and stage assaults planned from the far flanks of on the night ticket sales. I settled on a leisurely Main Thing saunter to the front to assess the situation (hoping I may be mistaken for part mime part performance artist to cover my blushes if rebuked). And then I got a first. My ticket was demanded and an officious pen was taken from an officious breast pocket and in large black letters WARNING was scrawled across the stub! What?? Ibd been yellow carded and we were only one song in! I asked if I could borrow the official security pen so I could write something short and succinct across his stern looking forehead but I was dispatched like a naughty child with the threat of expulsion if I even ventured beyond my seat again. So sniggering to myself, I mentally furled up the red rag and accepted that this would be a torso seat jiggling gig only. And it was good enough. However, the sound was commonly described as muddy and as sonic soup. Most of the band honestly looked exhausted with solos being counted out short before rattling onto the next song. However, this doesnbt mean to say that it wasnbt an enjoyable performance. Ferry patently loves New York and New York audiences. New York audiences patently adore Ferry and were desperate to be allowed to show their appreciation. Home town mentions during To Turn You On got rapturous applause and you could feel the tension mount, only for it to be defused by the interval. Alphaville was dropped and webd got to second base without a track from Olympia being played yet. Second song, second half and You Can Dance boomed out and got the aisles dancing. First time Ibve heard TGPT on this and his meaty playing took it to another level. Other highlights for me were hearing the Ferry version of Casanova and (strangely) Speddingbs solo on the end of My Only Love (I hope youbre all appreciating I havenbt initialized the songs here!). Someone must have put double AAs in his pace maker because he really went for it. OK, so if Einsteinbs theory is correct this is the point where everyone will get up offa their butts and make a break for it. And they did. So I made my way through the heart of the crowd and stake my place. Everyonebs up and having a great time, then to the theme tune of Jaws, I spot my nemesis at 9 obclock. The little swine has head of security with him this time and she (way to go sister!) demanded I leave. Then extraordinarily the chap next to me at the front who had been dancing like crazy in his wheelchair told her to leave me alone as I was his carer!! And just like that they were gone and my new best friend and I were allowed to really let go. We all got the hang of the Fonzi raise the flat hand away from you, drop the fist facing you dance and the band seemed reignited. Bang, straight into a full voltage Hold On Ibm Coming and New York was saved from security overkill. It seems there is a light that never goes out at the Beacon. On the way out the word goes round of an aftershow at The Standard Hotel. On to a bar to swap chat and hats with drunk baseball fans and for Mark the bar owner to tell us therebs an aftershow at The Standard. Then into the street where the wind in the trees whispered therebs an aftershow at The Standard. It seems the aftershow at The Standard was the worst kept secret in Manhattan. Messers Martin, Dillon, Deagler and I debunk to the meatpacking district and lo, a familiar bad penny from the past whose modus operandus was to get bona fide front row seat holders bumped out of their seats with bogus duplicate tickets, was hovering ominously by the entrance. But therebs no chance of entry without your names on the list bitchbs iPad. Thankfully, our names were down and we were going in. Welcome to The Boom Boom Room, so called because boom boom is what happens in the pitch black toilets with floor to ceiling windows over the street. The Standard I find out, is famous for the Vietnamese transvestite bshowsb performed in the windows at night and I have to say it has everything to encourage outrageous behavior. We of course, behaved (ahem) impeccably. TGPT is really enjoying the shows but the fatigue was explained by the number of overnight travels from A to B to C between gigs. Jorja was in high spirits and sends her love to all back home. But the highlight of my evening was meeting my hero. Yes, Mr Fonzi Thornton, Roxybs very own Luther Vandross, kissed my hand and blessed me. There was nothing left for it but to spend the rest of the night dancing in a biker bar til 4am. And to think Mr Deagler thought I was joking about finding a Chapter house! I hope everyone has the most amazing time at the Chicago gig and the remaining US dates. I big shout out to RD for helping us recoup our losses on spare tickets and to Mr JD for a swellegant elegant Brooklyn brunch. I canbt possibly imagine how the next time could be the best time. Its the first time I've missed a Ferry tour since the 70s. Please - have a martini for me! Have several. Wish I was there.
