Stallone reputedly got cold feet about him as he had been warned that rock stars in movies were 'bad mogambo' (and if you've seen Hearts of Fire, Freejack or Labyrinth it's hard to argue otherwise). Ferry was canned and Christopher Walken was given the Eric Qualen role but quit at the start of filming to be replaced by John Lithgow. Actually the movie isn't bad but maybe it's better that we didn't see BF chummying up with 'that bloke out of Eastenders' or falling to his death in a helicopter crash or worst of all being called Eric... There's an interesting codicil to the story. Two months before Cliffhanger was released in 1993, Stallone, Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis were promoting the opening of their Planet Hollywood restaurant in London and appeared on Aspel and Company, an ITV chat show hosted by Michael Aspel. Bryan Ferry was booked as the musical act, performing a really rather good, if mimed, version of 'Will You Love Me Tomorrow'. An ironic choice in the circumstances. Presumably there was a certain chill in the Green Room that night. Anyway the Hollywood big shots, clad in PH merchandise, practically took over the programme (Aspel started reading the restaurant menu, I have it on tape somewhere) and the show was later reprimanded by the TV regulators for the shameless plugging of their product. Aspel was so disenchanted by it all he quit as a chat show host. Also seem to remember him talking about Bond in Arena about '88 time and he said it was too camp and that life was too short.
