After a day of incessant torrential rain with jet-blackthunderclouds cemented to the sky, I wouldnbt have been surprised if Thetfordhad been rained off. So bemoaning the fact Ibd failed to pack my mirrorsequined cagoule and stiletto wellies, we trudged down to the depths of theSuffolk woodland usually used on a Saturday night purely for dogging (my 11 yearold godson reliably informed me). Instead of flashing headlights, jangling keys and StanColleymore breathing heavily on our back windows (this is not a metaphor) wewere met by hundreds of people having picnics in the rain, in the car park.Strange, but then the night was to become full of strange. First there was the bluegrass Scouse band Delta Maid, with aKerry Katona sound-alike who mutated into Dolly Parton. Then the heavens partedand out of the gloom came a shaft of sunlight and we were miraculouslysmothered in gold. Then off we went on the Ferry rollercoaster. It started offas a bit of a slow burn this time around, which gave us the chance to payattention to Neil Hubbard. He and Ollie seem to now at least be aware ofeachother, and I would be interested to see what kind of relationship develops overa series of concerts. Hubbard played some beautiful stuff during the eveningand even made Tara a bit more palatable now his acoustic work has substitutedSpeddobs tapas bar interpretation. I have to also say that Andy Newmark was onfire during Hurricane. Mr F was more chatty than usual, probably because he wasfilling between songs for the radio broadcast but did seem very relaxed. Thensomething very weird happened b I got scared. It started with those peskydancers in the black body stockings doing very weird stuff to Bitter Sweet bluckily Ibve never had to see that before, but they were directly in my eyeline this time. Then when F came back from his Tara comfort break b he emergedfrom the shadows not as Bryan Ferry but as Peter Lorre. He had mutated into RobertPattersonbs sinister uncle with hair askew and a menacing glint in his eye. Hiskeyboard doodlings in My Only Love were extended beyond the norm (and greatthey were too) but as the band let him play on Ollie was unaware of theMaestrobs lead in to the guitar solo. Ferry hunched over the keyboards, duckedunder the microphone, gritted his teeth and stared so intently it scared thelife out of all of us! Perhaps he really is Mr Silky String. But then it was afull moon and he left us all howling at it. Christopher E Lee P.S. Lovely to see you again Kate. ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Jul 2011 14:08:28 +0100 From: Richard Evans Subject: [AVALON] Westonbirt Part 3 Sorry for the delay in part 3 but I was away in Leicester for the w/e on a drum course As my earlier post said - I was very impressed with this show - band were great and Neil Hubbard brought some taste and class to the guitar section. As J has said Andy Newmark was on fire during Hurricane particularly but I thought he was magnificent throughout - to be honest I couldn't see Tara from our point of view and he didn't seem to be taking the lead on that many songs to be honest - he played well but I thought LST dragged a bit at times and was a lot slower than it has been recently. Despite my doubts the double drumming thing worked quite well on a couple of tunes but both me and my drumming mate couldn't work out why you needed someone in addition to Andy Newmark - nothing to do with Tara but .................. AN opened a magnificent ITIS with a drum groove rather than the guitar which worked well - RorR was great I thought. Bizarrely the two most disappointing songs were SOTT and WGO - I thought they were a bit 'pub' and not quite right for the band - the originals were guitar based and I think it showed - they were both great but that's just my view. Jorja was superb and an obvious crowd favourite - her solos in ITIS were magnificent and she was so much better for the music and show than Ian Dixon Ferry was in good form throughout and enjoying himself Cheers R ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Jul 2011 12:05:17 -0400 (EDT) From: kwil632057@aol.com Subject: [AVALON] True to Life/You Can Dance? Jonathan, can I be pedantic with this one and say that the opening note for True To Life is a C but the opening of You Can Dance is a semi tone lower with a B. They have either sampled True To Life and slowed it down slightly hence the lower pitch or he has just used the same keyboard sound and changed it's pitch and speed slightly. J.O'B.
