The footage for 'Smoke Gets In Your Eyes' from Top Of The Pops on 29th August 1974 was found about 2-3 years ago . It was part of a whole load of tapes that were found and had been presumed erased/lost. The tapes had many artists from many BBC TV shows and one of the tapes had the whole show that BF appeared on when he did Smoke Gets In Your Eyes. I had had contact with the then owner of these tapes who had inherited them from a friend who had died and was a former colleague of BBC. I tried to buy the one tape but it was expensive. I eventually met the owner at his home on a trip to Wales in 2009 and he couldn't show me the footage as he didn't have the machine to play the tape on but he played me a transferred soundtrack. The version of the song was different and it was great to hear an unreleased studio recording of Bryan's 1974 voice. The guy had an offer from America for all the tapes with certain conditions about the sale and that was that none of the tapes or any part of any of them had to be sold to anyone. The rich American 'collector' wanted these tapes exclusively for himself. He was the eventual recipient of all this stuff. The 'collector' probably sits at home and goes into his tape vault now and them and lick the tapes and giving them pet names leaving all this footage lost to real fans forever. At the same time as all this was happening I was involved in 'The Best Of Bryan Ferry' CD/DVD. I had brought this to Bryan's attention and intimated this bit of footage on the DVD would be quite a carrot to dangle in front of fans not only because it was rare but presumed gone forever. An reasonable offer was made for the tape with SGIYE on it but the guy wouldn't budge because of the American offer for the entire lot. I hope there is a similar story untold about the Pyjamarama, Street Life, Love Is The Drug, A Hard Rain's - Gonna Fall and You Go To My Head recordings andthat they would be unearthed someday, J.O'B. BF didn't do LST live on TOTP. Ferry's ext studio performance was not until 1978 with What Goes On. Three studio solo appearances from the 1970s have been lost; Hard Rain in 1973, Smoke Gets In Your Eyes from 1974 and You Go To My Head from 1975. Tragically Roxy's performances of Pyjamarama, Street Life and Love Is The Drug were also recorded over. What a waste. Pyjamarama was particularly effective (if memory serves) starting with the guys (in the FYP clothes) facing away from the cameras, to whirl around in time for the lyric. I think the Musician Union required artists appearing on TOTP to re-record the tracks. Lots of tracks seemed to have been re-recorded (or, I suspect, remixed without vocals) for TOTP appearances; Virginia Plain is similar, but the vocal is live and the oboe cuts in sooner. I think I prefer the TOPTP version! Hard Rain was a live vocal over the shorter version of the song, and Eddie Jobson was definitely in the background, out of focus. Can't stand the idea that it's gone forever when so much TOTP garbage survives. I used to have some of these as audio recordings; will try to find them. I did a fair amount of taping over for economy reasons at the time myself. You'd think, there would be SOME home taper, even at that early age. Surely someone took home a video machine, from their school or work, to save Mr. Ferry for there pleasure? I remember taping The King Biscuit Flour Hour off the radio (Manifesto tour), which I'd drug into work one Sunday night, in an age before supermodels roamed the earth. Which reminds me... Who ARE the Hard Rain's Gonna Fall video backup singers? Are those harpies even girls, a'la the Smoke Gets in Your Eyes Vid? Wasn't the story that those two videos were recorded in an afternoon, in a borrowed studio, on a zero Pound budget, with Antony Price running the shoot? Inquiring minds want to know!
