My favorites are Bete Noire & Boys and Girls, with Mamouna and Olympia coming in close behind. I think it's all a function of when one first got into Roxy and Ferry. Whatever their sound was at that time is probably a person's perception of what their sound should be. My first Roxy album was Avalon and my first Ferry was Boys and Girls, so those will always hold a special place in my esteem. Of course, this is not to say I don't like the rest of their output. In general, I think the first 5 Roxy albums are better than the final 3, for example. But it's nearly comparing the proverbial apples and oranges. It's amazing that a group or performer can produce material as different as "Out of the Blue" is from "Tara," or "Goddess of Love" from "Mamouna"---and yet still be themselves. Jeff, I've often wondered if that is the case. It is so nice to read I'm not alone in your line of reasoning! Excellent post - it really puts things into perspective in the grand scheme of personal preference within the Roxy Music, Bryan Ferry canon. Apples, oranges... I love fruit! My fault for not emphasizing that the "masses" to which I was referring is exclusive of our comparably tiny group that do buy any Roxy Music or Bryan Ferry tunes (that is, "masses" ~ 99.999% of music consumers vs. BF/RM 'mass' ~ 1 in every 1,000,000 music consumers (disclaimer: the stats are for illustration purposes only, an estimation on my part, and may not reflect reality)). "But isn't it great that the man attracts people with so many different tastes? To me: .. whatever makes you dance." Respectfully, I whole heartedly agree on that! Happy Trails.
