He has been ill I suppose, which might have affected the rehearsal period but it is really bizarre that we aren't getting Shameless, Tender is the Night and Song to the Siren which are all rehearsed and sound great live. Didn't Ferry express in an interview that he wished he was touring the Olympia material rather than doing the Roxy dates? Weird, because this set list doesn't really indicate that this is an 'Olympia Tour'. I understand why Same Old Scene made the setlist (for night one at least) because that was the one that belatedly got the 02 going on the Roxy tour. Maybe it failed to do the same for our Danish friends? Given that Reason or Rhyme is clearly Ferry's favourite track on the album, I'm surprised and dismayed we aren't getting that one on the tour. It'd work so well with Ferry on the keyboards for the first part before coming to the front just in time to perform the vocal duties after the extended instrumental in the middle... I wonder if Olympia's poor chart position has made the Ferry camp lose faith in the album and the audiences' appetite to hear it? I hope not. Hearing material live can often change opinions and win over the hesitant... And for heavens sake, why can't we have BF Bass done as a full funk workout? That track has so much live potential (particularly the amazing Boogie Corporation version), it'd make an excellent concert opener... Ten years ago this very day a fortunate group of Roxy fans, including a hardcore of Avalonians, were ushered into the Riverside Studios in Hammersmith for the recording of the BBC Roxy Music Special. Personally I hadn't seen Roxy for 19 years, and certainly never from 10 feet away, so it I felt extraordinarily lucky to witness the first reunion of the band after all those years. There was a really fun atmosphere and we were all excited at this insight into the forthcoming world tour. I was still a bit wide-eyed as the band crashed into Virginia Plain. Out of The Blue, Jealous Guy, Love Is The Drug and a spectacularly be-feathered version of Do The Strand followed. It was a pretty surreal experience, the handful of songs lasting barely more than an hour before the band were gone and we decamped to the pub for the post-match analysis. A great night, and one of my favourite Roxy memories. And 2003, off to Radio City Music Hall, and then a hastily arranged flight to Detroit to stay with Mark Shanahan (and Jan).
