Roxy #35 an hr - absolute bargain! Sting in the tail my car was 'compounded' - so #80 taxi home. Ah well felt a bit like a rock-star - except it was a clapped out Nissan! I'm looking for 2/3 good spares (me and the 'kids') for O2 if anyone's been left stranded? I think SteveSiren is looking for one as well. A text on 07824 547474 would be appreciated - if so - as I'm off to Barca for the weekend in the morning - back Monday lunchtime. What a treat. How strange it was to hear 'Prairie Rose', an album track I'd never been too keen on, sound *so* *powerful* when played last night. The same could be said of 'Bitter Sweet', and 'Sentimental Fool' (appropriately) resulted in a stream of involuntary tears welling in my eyes as that beautiful song was belted out, for some bizarre reason...? It was absolutely vintage stuff, in every sense. Most of the audience - I'd guess about 80% - sat in stunned silence for the first half of the show which consisted of mainly obscure (to the non-initiated) yet longed-for (by the mugs like me) album tracks spanning almost 40 years of their work. The remaining 20% loved it to bits. The second half of the show included all the 'popular' stuff - 'Virginia Plain', 'Jealous Guy', 'Do The Strand', etc. - so the fair-weather fans also got their reward... Quick word on the band/sound mix - PM's playing sounded a little muted in a bass-heavy mix, but thankfully those golden notes on 'Just Like You' cut cleanly through the air directly to that little switch in my brain which makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. Wonderful stuff. Jorja - what a babe - and she can play too! TGPT - absolute, solid as rock powerhouse of a drummer. Andy Mac - searing oboe - just beautiful to witness. Young Ollie's getting on a bit now (21, isn't he?) but the pleasure's writ large on his young features as he works those strings. The dancers - marvellous/hypnotic to watch. The backing singers - faultless. Jerry Meehan on bass - very impressive playing. I know he ain't everyone's cup of tea, but Colin Good put in another solid performance. Mr. F? Well, it was clear he would be struggling with the upper end bits, but it was worked around cleverly and his voice was plenty powerful enough and note-perfect on the majority of the songs. Biggest delight for me was 'Amazona'. A wonderful complement of first class, highly skilled musicians displaying beautifully crafted work honed to perfection. Just a hint of a heavy heart at the realisation that it would probably be the very last time I would get to see the finest band on the planet perform live... ho hum...* I know that time spent well is so rare*... Ah well - at least we're in for a DVD. In the meantime, enjoy O2. Dave. ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 03 Feb 2011 09:51:37 -0500 From: kwil632057@aol.com Subject: [AVALON] RE: Roxy - stripped for action! I was recently handed a copy of The Amulet of Samarkand - a delightful comic book fantasy - to review. What does this have to do with Roxy Music, I hear you ask? Well, within three pages there is street scene with one of the shops clearly named 'Mackay's Music Emporium'. Hmmm. Later in the book, a tin of tobacco bears the name 'Virginia Plain'. Surely a coincidence? Then, a later street scene shows another shop, this time called 'Hair by Smile'. Of course, the artist in question has been dropping obscure and downright blatant Roxy references into his work for many years now: it's the mighty Lee Sullivan! Good work sir! :-) J ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 03 Feb 2011 11:53:56 -0500 From: kwil632057@aol.com Subject: [AVALON] Roxy audio reviews/discussion Some interesting critiques of Roxy/Ferry material here: http://rockcriticsarchives.com/audiovisual/index-roxy.html Apologies if it's already been covered!
