Well, sort of. Over the years, Glasgow has oft been the meeting place for such a large number of us, for yet more of all this Roxy Music shenanigans. Not that I'm complaining - - ideal for me, a trip back to my hometown (a Roxy or Ferry gig is always the catalyst for a visit) to meet up with everyone, many who also travel from afar, is an absolute joy. It's been said many times - and I hope it will continue to be said well into the future - but the meeting up, before and after, the travel, the chit chat, the reminiscing, is all part of it. It's really not just the gig. I just couldn't stay away from that setlist - I had to peek - after all, there were 2 gigs before my Glasgow visit on the Friday, and there was no way at all that I had any self control of avoiding finding out what was on offer. I was amazed. It's not something we've been used to, over the years, a spot of self indulgence from Roxy. Quite the opposite in fact - but not this time. This really was much more of a 'Fans Setlist'. Much has been said of the rather 'muddy sound', yes, i noticed it too. But did I care ? Not really - the opportunity to hear some of those songs again, 2HB, Amazona et al, was something I, and so many others, thought they would never, ever, get the chance to do again. The 'dread' amongst many, was a carbon copy setlist of the last few years. We never expected the opposite. I understand the general bemusement of the 'casual fans' who attended, who wondered what on earth they were hearing, for an hour. It brought a wry smile to many of us, ahem, 'diehards', I can tell you. The inclusion of 'Sentimental Fool' was a wonderful surprise - I know it had been rehearsed for a recent Ferry solo tour, but it didn't make the cut - but to have it here was so special. I've said it before, and I'll say it again - I name it as my fave Roxy song. Not the whole thing, mind - it's a particular part of it that just hypnotises, gets under your skin, into your brain, the dizzy spin I'm in - get your CDs out folks - for if anyone, ever, said to me, "so, what's this Roxy Music band all about then" ?, I'll direct them to the 5th Studio album, Track 3, and ask them to play from 4.44, to 6.10. Then I'll say, "THAT, my friend, is Roxy Music". I've never heard a more spine-chilling minute and a half. It got me thinking. There I was, in Box L, Seat 1, in the Glasgow Apollo, on a chilly winters evening, on the Siren Tour. The set opened with Sentimental Fool - and that was the last time I had heard Roxy play that song. Now, a little over 310,105 hours later, they're playing it again. (Aren't calculators great ? ) :) A long time to wait, especially to relive one minute. But the whole damn gig was fabulous. Go see them if you possibly can - the best Band in the World are in town. Well there has been much talk over set lists, Ferry's voice, personnel etc over the months since Lovebox. I would have been the first to criticise another re-run of what turned out to be a decade of the same setlist. Added to the fact that ticket prices have risen about 80%, hardly keeping in line with inflation! I subsequently only bought a ticket for one of these shows (I did 4 in 2000). I'd been trawling all the fan sites looking for clues from rehersals etc: these stated to leak through a few weeks ago, we were asked to reserve judgement until the setlist was revealed track by track via VivaRoxyMusic. I personnaly couldn't believe my eyes, this looked like the perfect antidote to what had gone before. So to the concert. It started with Mojito's at the Metropole, but I rather rushed mine so as to make my way to the soulless concourse of the LG Arena. There were faces I recognised, but didn't speak to. These are people, ney fans that probably went to see Roxy and Ferry at The Town Hall, Odeon, Aston Villa Centre and the previously named NEC Arena (now the LG). The very shows, the same euphoric experiences I've witnessed over the years. I've never spoken to these people ( shyness prevents us? ), but I know how they are feeling as they wait, finishing their drinks wondering if this could be the last time we all assemble together? I made my way to my seat (after being prompted by a fellow Roxy fan via Face Book, who pointed out they were due on any minute! What was I doing!!!), I had no sooner sat down when the security asked us to stand up against the front rail. Now I have to commend the typical RM fan here, was there a mad rush? No, we all allowed ladies at the front, guys stood back to let others through, so with just 2 people between me and Phils place on stage I was happy. The lights dimmed, there was a uproar of applause and we hit the ground running, Phils guitar very much taking the fore as we were hearing it straight from his moniter. Standing this close to the stage was not going to be the best place for audio excellance (my choice, so I won't judge this show on the sound). Now I'd prayed to hear some of these songs live again, some I'd never heared before JLY, TTYO. The playing throughout was superb, Phil was note perfect, Andy blew up a storm, Bryans voice was good (in fact I overheard some people discussing this on the way out and their worries were unfounded, so they said). I did wonder back towards the back of the hall during Avalon (i've never thought that track, which I love works well live) and the sound was good. Although there was no encore, the final Tryptich of EOY, DTS & FYP were brilliant, and if they had gone off after EOY, then come back on for the last two the momentum would have been lost. We were left wanting more. And I do. ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 02 Feb 2011 12:05:20 +0000 From: Richard Evans Subject: Re: [AVALON] Birmingham LG Arena. And for all you boys out there who thought Ferry might be the lure for The Body (where can you buy one of those by the way?) it's more likely Lucky Jonathan Somerset's yer man. And for the laydeez, Alan Hansen put in an appearance! Just wanted to also draw your attention to the left hand side of the navigation on this review page to listen to or download Deaf School's new single. It has their Roxy influence imprinted all over it. They're doing dates right now but sadly I missed their London appearance as I was following some other "oldies" band. Their Glasgow, Manchester and Liverpool gigs should be a blast.
