Great playlist, iffy sound, and I still can't get a grip on the performances themselves. I've heard one bootlegged performance of "Sentimental Fool" (from 1976) and thought Ferry sounded Godawful. The notion of him reprising the song 35 years later is mind-boggling. Ditto "Same Old Scene," which like "More Than This" was/is way out of Ferry's vocal range as a live piece. And yet the random songs that the band has rolled out this tour are amazing! "2 HB"? "To Turn You On"? "Amazona"? Jesus, even if our man is croaking like a frog on those numbers, what a moment that must be live! ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon - -- The Open University is incorporated by Royal Charter (RC 000391), an exempt charity in England & Wales and a charity registered in Scotland (SC 038302). ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe avalon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 01 Feb 2011 12:26:43 -0500 From: "K B Porter" Subject: Re: [AVALON] Re: NEC LG Arena It's great to read a substantial review from 'one of our own'. Well, sort of. Over the years, Glasgow has oft been the meeting place for such a large number of us, for yet more of all this Roxy Music shenanigans. Not that I'm complaining - - ideal for me, a trip back to my hometown (a Roxy or Ferry gig is always the catalyst for a visit) to meet up with everyone, many who also travel from afar, is an absolute joy. It's been said many times - and I hope it will continue to be said well into the future - but the meeting up, before and after, the travel, the chit chat, the reminiscing, is all part of it. It's really not just the gig. I just couldn't stay away from that setlist - I had to peek - after all, there were 2 gigs before my Glasgow visit on the Friday, and there was no way at all that I had any self control of avoiding finding out what was on offer. I was amazed. It's not something we've been used to, over the years, a spot of self indulgence from Roxy. Quite the opposite in fact - but not this time. This really was much more of a 'Fans Setlist'. Much has been said of the rather 'muddy sound', yes, i noticed it too. But did I care ? Not really - the opportunity to hear some of those songs again, 2HB, Amazona et al, was something I, and so many others, thought they would never, ever, get the chance to do again. The 'dread' amongst many, was a carbon copy setlist of the last few years. We never expected the opposite. I understand the general bemusement of the 'casual fans' who attended, who wondered what on earth they were hearing, for an hour. It brought a wry smile to many of us, ahem, 'diehards', I can tell you. The inclusion of 'Sentimental Fool' was a wonderful surprise - I know it had been rehearsed for a recent Ferry solo tour, but it didn't make the cut - but to have it here was so special. I've said it before, and I'll say it again - I name it as my fave Roxy song. Not the whole thing, mind - it's a particular part of it that just hypnotises, gets under your skin, into your brain, the dizzy spin I'm in - get your CDs out folks - for if anyone, ever, said to me, "so, what's this Roxy Music band all about then" ?, I'll direct them to the 5th Studio album, Track 3, and ask them to play from 4.44, to 6.10. Then I'll say, "THAT, my friend, is Roxy Music". I've never heard a more spine-chilling minute and a half. It got me thinking. There I was, in Box L, Seat 1, in the Glasgow Apollo, on a chilly winters evening, on the Siren Tour. The set opened with Sentimental Fool - and that was the last time I had heard Roxy play that song. Now, a little over 310,105 hours later, they're playing it again. (Aren't calculators great ? ) :) A long time to wait, especially to relive one minute. But the whole damn gig was fabulous. Go see them if you possibly can - the best Band in the World are in town. Getting a Reecey concert review is a special treat in and of itself. I'm not going to be able to make it to the UK for this special tour, but I am beyond thrilled that it is happening - hearing so many happy Avalonians warms my heart. :) Enjoy this!!!
